The Dude filming the cop had it coming. He should know if you shake a tree long enough a leopard's gonna drop out.

They're not thinking about the cloud, either.

The only way this is going to stop is if the authorties crack down - and they are reluctant because the cops are their swords.

So if I go to buy furniture should I be able to record the salesperson in case he lies to me?

I don't believe a live recording would be in the cloud. Pretty sure the device would need to first save the video when complete. Also most people probably only upload to the cloud when on WiFi to save data.

What is the back story? Why in the world were the cops dressed in riot gear at what looks like a park?

Perhaps not - but it betrays 20th century thinking to destroy the camera and think the video is destroyed.

Again - maybe, but these cats that go out to intentionally video cops might turn on some remote capture - again - I wouldn't assume anything if I were a cop, except that everything I did was videoed.

I believe 38 states have one party consent laws, where it isn't wiretapping as long as one party consents. Massachusetts and some.others are two party consent states, but even then you can record police in their official duties. Boston PD got sued big time and lost for that exact reason and supposedly retrained all of their officers as such.

Besides, the furniture company probably videotaped you when you walked in. Do you think that's illegal?

What will it take for shite like this to stop? I'm honestly sick of it. I don't know if this is happening more or because of today's technology the truth about these things are being exposed. I couldn't imagine living before video cameras. Cops know they are being recorded and still don't give a frick.

If the guy selling you the sofa has the authority to potentially arrest you on trumped up charges, beat you and claim you were a threat, or shoot you dead for the same...then yes.

Police are public servants that are granted an IMMENSE level of authority over our lives, despite being poorly paid and therefore attracting either people that simply want to serve despite the poor pay, people who are attracted to that level of power and control over others, or dumbasses. Each of us probably knows some of each of those groups, do we not?

Even under the best of situations, the authority they have ought to warrant their interactions with the public be recorded EVERY CHANCE we get. There is simply no reason not to, both for the protection of the officer AND for the protection of the citizen who is at a TREMENDOUS disadvantage should the officer overstep his bounds.

I am pretty pro-police but let me say this. Screw this officer. It is OBVIOUS that he is glancing down to make sure he steps on this guys phone. Everything else aside, he is intentionally destroying a citizen's property. That is criminal.

I have LESS sympathy for people who run up to a single officer trying to make an arrest and try to jump in the middle to film. That is dangerous. This, on the other hand, is some sort of demonstration or whatnot and the Officer's should EXPECT to be filmed and to have people acting the arse. That gives them much less of an excuse.

This one makes me mad as a US Citizen. Most of the crap the OT Cop Haters post doesn't.

The police are the government. They work for us. They also are one of the few organizations that are granted, by us, the legitimate use of force. It's completely different than someone working the fryer at McDonald's.

And is EXTREMELY rare. Most of the videos we see like this are people filming from across a street or a good distance away and the officer sees them, stops what he's doing, and goes to them to confront them...and then claims they are obstructing him from his duties...which he left to come hassle them.

A few thoughts:

1. There are a lot of police officers who are hard working people doing their best at a difficult, often unappreciated job.

2. A small minority (but still a sizable number of people) of police officers abuse their power and need to be held accountable.

3. In general, when in public, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy. If you are in a park you may be filmed (exception for the restroom).

I'm not sure where you got this from, but it's simply not true. The government is your boss, not the other way around. You don't get to film your boss whenever you feel like it.
