The Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

We don't live in a totalitarian regime (or at least we aren't supposed to.)

the people that go all d-bag when filming these incidents ruin the intended meaning of the situation

You can film and document and not be such a damn tool about it

How dumb is the cop to think that stomping on it would render the sd card useless?

I don't see why people think it's ok to film cops doing their jobs. If somebody filmed you working the fryer wouldn't you get creeped out too?

Maybe but that doesnt justify breaking the law. If a cop said "sir, you are creeping me out" i'd be ok with that.

Sounds great. Go tell a cop, a local politician or a postman what to do and see if they treat you like you're their boss.

Government doesn't work for you, you work for it.

Legally you can, so why not? I record everything, phone calls and 99% of things when it's 1on1 conversation.

I learned that when I was a LEO and my Lt tried screwing me over until I played back the recording of the phone conversation showing he was wrong.

With that said, the guy filming should get his right's right. For the law's sake.. I don't think "Freedom to Film" is in the Constitution.

Well, he may not have the terminology down, but the SC ruled last year that citizens do have a right to film cops.

2)It has saved people from being falsely accused and sent to prison under false pretenses. If you had the choice between going to jail for doing nothing wrong and filming police what would you do?

So if I go to buy furniture should I be able to record the salesperson in case he lies to me?

Nice cop logic. Should cops be allowed to video citizens without their consent? What about dash cams and red light cameras?

You cops seem to forget that you're PUBLIC servants. You out on the street is not private.

Are you kidding? A fryer doesn't have the power to kick your arse, falsely accuse you of shite that can ruin you life forever and is not a public servant paid by taxpayers and sworn to uphold the law. They break it themselves with impunity on a daily basis and filming their activities, which is a 1st amendment right, protects not only others but yourself if you are in a situation.

I don't understand why people think videoing anyone is a freedom.

While I agree with your statement, the issue lies within the system that the "good" cops turn the other way and fail to hold them accountable.

Some might chastise me for this analogy, but the priest-abuse scandals in the Catholic Church operated in a somewhat similar manner until the media went nuts and the Church was forced to take action.

And I'm pretty sure the fact that they are almost NEVER held accountable is what's pushed people over the edge lately with their hatred towards cops.

At the very worst this guy might get fired(I'll believe that when I see it). If a citizen did this to a police officer, he would be in jail and beaten pretty badly.

If you're out in public you have no expectation to a right to privacy. Anyone can film you. I don't care if you're a cop or not. I get why cops might not like the idea because they never like to be 2nd guessed, but they're gonna have to learn to deal with it.

Then you need to educate yourself. Are you familiar with oppressive governments or police states? Probably not. Just like a lot of Americans that have no clue and are absolutely jaded about what we are afforded through our constitution. The freedom part has to do with the right or freedom to hold our government, public officials etc. accountable without the fear of being sent to prison or Siberia for questioning authority.
