Giving Two Weeks Notice

IF you give your employer your two weeks notice, are they obligated (by Law) to pay you even if they tell you to take a hike?

Sounds like you were a pretty shitty employee if you are worried about them telling you to take a hike. Most employers highly encourage putting in a 2-week notice as it gives them time to prepare and find a new person to replace you.

Sounds like both parties will benefit with this decision.

No. However, as a result of them telling you to take a hike, they discharged you at their own leisure and not for good cause due to misconduct.

Congrats, you're now eligible for Unemployment if that's truly what happened and you didn't get any accrued vacation or leave payouts. Those are deducitble from your benefits.

So the truth is you probably won't be able to collect by the time you start your new gig.

Telling someone to take a hike when they put in their two week' notice is pretty standard.

It's shitty to do, but companies do it all the time.

Says nothing about the employee.

No it's not at all, actually.

Well maybe for rent-a-cops and burger flippers such as yourself, seeing how there are a plethora of people out there that can do your job.

However, for people with actual skill-sets that are in more demanding and professional positions, it can take longer to find a viable replacement.

It is for people that deal with sensitive information or if you deal directly with customers/clients and you're leaving for a new position at a competing firm.

You are right, though. You've really moved up in the world now...working at your dad's shop and all. I wonder if he would accept a 2-week notice...

When I managed for a very large national chain and someone gave notice, if I knew they weren't going to be focused on what needed to be done we would pay them for the two weeks and let them go.

I doubt plenty of people could even pass basic training, let alone the advanced training I went through, let alone do the job. Yourself included
