I helped refugees through this program in the first half of 2014 in Baton Rouge. Two Iraqi families and an Afghan family came, the rest were Hispanic. I taught an ESL class and helped them with everyday stuff that was new to them. I got really close with an Iraqi couple and their four kids. They were excellent people. I took the kids to the St. Jude fair and they did an Easter egg hunt at my house. The father was really hardworking. The only time he got angry was when the process of getting him a job wasn't going fast enough.
I think it's important for more people to have experiences like these. I still think Muslim extremists are the worst people on the planet, but everyone should get to know a few regular families for some perspective.
Edit: Forgot to add that Catholic Charities BR doesn't have nearly enough staff to handle 55 people. I'd expect an extra family or two, or maybe these Syrian refugees would get resettled ahead of the other groups on the waiting list.
