Update:

the heart of the U.S. government's case against Apple was that it could not unlock the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone 5c without Apple's help. And yet that also appears to be its greatest weakness, leading the FBI to request a postponement of a court hearing Tuesday out of concern that it would not win, experts told International Business Times.

The FBI and tech giant Apple had been set to square off over whether the company should be required to build new software capable of unlocking the phone used by Syed Farook, a so-called backdoor to the iPhone's extensive encryption. Instead, the FBI revealed in acourt filing Monday evening it may no longer need Apple’s assistance to open the iPhone now that an outside party has demonstrated “a possible method for unlocking Farook’s phone,” pending a presentation for the Justice Department.

Not only is that an indication the government believes a third party can break Apple’s encryption, but, experts said, it also seems to prove that the Justice Department will be unable to prove in court it has exhausted every resource as is required under the All Writs Act

There's now another player in Apple's encryption battle with the FBI after officials said a third party has come forward and "demonstrated" a "possible method" to cracking into a locked iPhone, prompting the U.S. government to postpone a court hearing scheduled for today.

New questions have arisen about the identity of the third party, their methods for possibly cracking Apple's encryption and whether the development is a legal win, of sorts, for Apple. The company has been fighting a government order compelling Apple to help create a way for officials to unlock an iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino, California, shooters.

Yeah I am kind of indifferent toward this. I don't like the idea of the police state, but I also don't have anything to hide and couldn't really care less if the government is interested in the dumbass conversations me and my jackass friends are having.

If I remember, that McAffee dude told the world how to do it on live TV. He said it the FBI couldn't do it, we were all in trouble. He called the process simple.

Exactly right. The NSA could crack this phone in a second. They want the case law for future phones.

"cautiously optimistic" does not equal

FBI no longer needs Apples help breaking into phone

Although I also have an iphone, I hope this dude is able to crack it. Apple has gotten too greedy and this will take them down a notch if it's true.

this was never about breaking into the phone. It was about the FBI setting precedent. Of course its a win for the APPLE. Honestly though I don't see how they will be able to without an apple signature. Brute force will not work and no company, not even the NSA can unencrypt once its fully encrypted.

I've always loved the BS story that Apple could crack the phone, but the NSA? No fricking way.

Then why did they delay the hearings for today? Honest question. If all they cared about was creating legal precedent that a company provide a way to gain access to it's products, then how would a third party "possibly" gaining access have any affect?
