We used to tailgate by this guy that managed a downtown hotel in Nola.

He told me one year they had to evacuate entire Hotel.
Turns out a group a 10 or so grambling or southern fans were piled in a room and one genius thought it would be a good idea to bring a fry daddy and fry fish in the room. Grease got too hot.

You shouldn't back down from that. Your statement is technically accurate.

Here's another accurate statement. On March 21st there was a shooting on Bourbon that resulted in the death of one and injury of another.

That is not to say violent crime doesn't not happen elsewhere in the quarter other times of the year.

I agree. And I would go further to say that there is zero evidence that gun crime is more likely to happen on Bayou Classic weekend than any other weekend.

I thought someone posted a link within the past few days that said the city was on pace to have its most murders in a number of years--something like a 30% increase. Isn't NO over 100+ murders right now?

I think the city is at 108 right now. Last year the count was 150 and that was the lowest in like 50 years.

Actually closer to 140, that Poli Board post is pretty old....

You're correct ... Nola.com has the current count at 139. Still very very low in historic terms and on pace to be one of if not the lowest murder number in the last 50 years

Chicago is very segregated. Their housing projects are mostly on the south side and not right next to downtown/ tourist areas.

And I'm still willing to bet New Orleans will end up in the top 10 nationally for murder rates per capita.

That could be the case. Baton Rouge may beat New Orleans out, though.

Not the parts I go to in Chicago. I feel safer than Nola in Chicago.

Certainly possible. Both cities are declining and need a chance in political leadership.

Well I'm going to Chicago in a few weeks, so feel free to share all the places you frequent so I'll know to avoid them.

I go to Chicago a ton. You should check out the old Chicago Athletic Club. Great renovation with some very interesting restaurants and bars

You are probably right. Just as the following statement is...

The cities with the highest murder rates per capita also have majority black populations.

Appreciate it.

I just found out I'm going last night so haven't really looked anything up, so any advice is welcomed. Not meaning to hijack the thread though.

That is not a list of cities by murder rate per capita, which is what I was referring to.

However, here is the exact same website with a list more accurately reflecting my statement.

New Orleans #9 (Baton Rouge #30)

I'm aware it didn't take into account murders. But this thread has been talking about crime in general like the shooting at the park.

Just giving perspective that crime doesn't only exist in NOLA

In fairness, I don't think anyone has made that assertion. And if they had, it would have been dumb.

Wow.

Bayou Classic and LSU vs. A&M in BR same weekend. Sounds like a situation ripe for racial upheaval. May need to keep Arkansas as last game of the year.

Always check for the Bayou Classic before a trip to NO.
