I think you might have been too triggered to catch the broader point here.
You didn't make a broader point, you specifically attacked them and have no clue about their sitatuion. Cutting back on vacations and putting less into retirement for them could look nothing like the next family, but you want to paint everyone with a broad brush so you can post on a message board about how morally superior you are to everyone else.
Sounds to me like you are the one living vicariously through others by constantly trolling for articles about people you don't even know and posting critically about their actions to make you feel better about yourself. What a sad and pathetic existence.

I take it you still haven't read the article?

Mad? Find it comical and a bit sad for pecker. Regardless, I'm checking out. Things to do. Got to go pick my kids up for private crossfit before they meet with their nutritionist.

I get where you are coming from but you are dead wrong with this family. I happen to know them. They are very well off, great people, didn't really uproot from Dallas, and golf is their passion.
Stop being a self righteous prick when you have no clue what you are talking about.
Hey Mr Davis.

quote:Isn't there a study released which showed that a large percentage of Americans are unable to come up with $500 in an emergency or had pretty much zero savings?
Most American families (63%) spend anywhere from $100 to $499 per child each month on youth sports, TD Ameritrade found. Another 18% fork over $500 to $999 monthly. Roughly one in 10 (11%) spend $1,000 to $1,999. On the high end, 8% said they spend $2,000 per month or more, or $24,000-plus per year.
I wonder how these two studies would overlap.
This is just another symptom of "keeping up with the Jones'" mentality.

$60k a year in high school tuition so the kid might get a $60k a year college scholy.
Seems legit.

We played baseball all over the Southern US. We spent $10K on a weeklong baseball trip/tournament to Cooperstown, NY (flights, hotel, expenses for family of 4). Really don't know how much I spent. But it was worth every penny, made some awesome memories, great friends and would do it all over again. As for my son's baseball career, he's a senior in HS will probably start for his school this season. College will not cost him/us a dime because of his grades and ACT score. Will he play baseball at the next level? Don't know, don't really care its his decision but we never spent a dime on baseball for a scholarship? Pro Career? it was fun! We enjoyed it as a family!
Hell I spend thousands on my daughter to travel around with a local dance/theater group competing in Orlando, Atlanta, etc. She's in school to be an accountant! But she loved every minute of it and it still involved with the dance school as a teacher.
Just cause you can't or wouldn't spend the money don't knock those who do. They go make it, they can choose how to spend it!

I work in healthcare. We see these kids all the time for injuries that 14 year old kids should not have. Those parents aren't just looking at college. They legit think their kid is going pro. And when they're told they will be out for a season or 6 months or a year, they want to know how much they can do with their "private trainer" to get back faster. It's horrible and child abuse IMO. Sometimes I want to cry for those kids.

Do y'all not read these articles?
This isn't a group of people who are financially sound and have $10,000 to drop on a weekend.
This is discussing individuals who are already financially strapped and now have resorted to using retirement funds, savings, etc., to pay for this.
Read the article.
I'm not saying they should be banned from doing it, but it is absolutely, 100% moronic.

Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and make fun of people who are spending thousands towards getting their elementary student a college athletic scholarship. LOL

at least its going towards development in a sport that the kid can play for the rest of his life. same can't be said for those who spend equal amounts for baseball, dancing and such just to give it up later in life.
on the flip side, there have been plenty of men and women who "make it on tour" that come from meager beginnings.
money doesn't create talent.
