Why can't parents just be honest? They think their kid is special just like every other parent and instead of pushing him to a career with a higher chance of success (like engineering or computer science) they try to ride, what they believe will one day be their cash cow, to a big pay day.
We're way deep into club soccer for my 11 year old, and it's pretty much something we do for him to bring a sense of pride and accomplishment. I'm an engineer and I'll never push him that direction. Be a punk rocker, or a DJ or whatever...if that fails sell paint or pools or pipeline valves.

People will look back on travel youth sports and laugh at the money wasted on these teams.
It is really sad to see parents flush money down the toilet once they are conned into the travel sports concept.
Unless little Johnny is in the top 0.1% of players, he has NO business on a travel team.

That's crazy. Its letting him play the sport loves. His last year of rec league was embarrassing for the other kids, it's really the only outlet we have. I think he'll run track and maybe kick footballs, but at 11 the high school coach knows him well and is excited he's getting trained up. No expectation past high school, I save money for his education. I'd rather him go to an SEC school that get a scholarship to somewhere smaller.

You have no idea how much money I've spent on motocross racing for my kid, and I'm not even close to a lot of the people we race with.
Just a quick run down.
Race gas $12 per gallon
$40-$60 entry fee
Motor rebuild @ 30 hours, I know kids that ride 20 hours a week, we don't
Bike $6,000
Suspension guy has the forks and shock right now, that's another $1,000 this week
Been through 2 helmets this year @ $600 each
Boots $250
New gear every few months at $150 - $200
I estimate I spent over $15,000 last year between gas, gear, maintenance, traveling, and the bike itself.
He will likely be getting a new bike by spring too since he's outgrowing the 65. I'm thinking March or April we will move him up to an 85.

I pay $25 a month for my 2yr old son to play in the soccer classes at his daycare?
Safe to say it's a good investment

My BIL spent huge sums on his kid's efforts to become a world class ski jumper. They live in Park City, UT.
They went to Austria, Switzerland, France, Canada, Germany and Japan. He climbed to as high as 9th in the world in the Junior Olympic category. He quit at 16. Quit college and now works as part of the service staff at a hotel.
Oh, it's a Waldolph Astoria and he pulls down between $3-$4k a week.

quote:im 48, I remember baseball was almost exactly like now. You just didn't play any travel, if it had existed we would've played it.
Call me old-fashioned, but youth sports used to be about sportsmanship, teamwork, sacrifice, and hard work. If you were good enough to make it the next level, then so be it.
I don't see how anyone Siena's that kinda dough in a kid though. My boy played travel ball last year, I doubt we paid more than 1k all year

I once worked for a couple that was so determined to turn their daughter (age 7) into a tennis star that they took her out of school so she could spend more time practicing and playing tennis.
They hired me to homeschool her. I thought they were a bit nuts but they paid me a lot of money so I had no complaints. She was a sweet kid.

That is ridiculous.
Kids only get to be kids once in their lives and there is nothing wrong with traveling and letting them enjoy competing.
We travel all over the country competing not because we believe he is gonna be a pro but because my son enjoys it and has fun.
He has got to see many different sights and has made good friends all over the country.
Spending time with my kids and traveling around visiting different places with them isn't flushing money down the drain. It's worth every penny.

What happened to kids riding their bike down to the local park and joining a neighborhood sports team?
Man back in my day parents gave us a stick, ball, and bike. We had to figure out the rest of it to keep entertained.

This article is racist. That's why I want my kid to be a rapper.

Is service staff at Waldolph Astoria code for "rents his butt out to rich gay men"?

When my boy went through school I wanted to do things to help him. I'd spend a few bucks then step back see if he would demonstrate passion for a sport. It never happened with him. I think a lot of parents are passionate about pushing a kid even when the kid has no passion for what the parent wants.

I went to a small town high school football game last year and they had these professional looking posters of each player along the fence of the field.
This is in a poor area.
It looked like hero worship of teenagers and I know parents had to sacrifice to pay for that along with their kids uniforms and athletic gear which was top notch.
