What makes you think that they want your sympathy?

If you think that's bad, you should read up on K2.

I've been following them as well. And for the other posters who haven't heard of "everestnofilter" yet, these dudes are summiting the north force withOUT supplemental oxygen.

Holy shite.

An Australian woman who set out to climb Mount Everest to prove that “vegans can do anything” died Saturday after developing altitude sickness.

Maria Strydom, 34, had reached the final camp from the summit before she and her husband, Robert Gropel, both began suffering from high-altitude pulmonary edema, which caused fluid to build up in Strydom’s brain, the Washington Post reports.

pay 50k to die. I think regular people could do it no problem, it's the silver spoons that have a hard time with it.

The real problem is the Sherpas. I am glad they are there to help people and to make money in a relatively poor Asian country, but they almost always end up babysitting and holding people's hand to get to the top, create rope lines, secure foot/hand holds...

Without them there would be <1/3 of the current people trying, and the people trying would be actual mountaineers, not the silver spoons/weekend warriors. It's turning into a amusement trip for the unqualified but rich.

If you want to see what Everest should be like, look at K2.

Nepal's tourism minister, Kripasur Sherpa, has announced plans to restrict who is allowed to ascend the mountain, measures that are to be implemented before the spring climbing season. Speaking frankly on the matter, Sherpa said: "We cannot let everyone go on Everest and die. If they are not physically and mentally fit it will be like a legal suicide.

Just never understood that crap.
So you get to say you climbed a mountain. Ok, great!

Just too many negatives when trying to defy gravity, temps, oxygen, etc.

It used to big a much much bigger deal before it turned into amateur hour

I know climbing Everest isn't what it used to be, but to say it is "amateur hour" is ignorant.

For all you badasses that "just wanna do base camp,"

First of all, I'm not a pussy like Subash.

Second of all, there is a video of my fat arse running uphill on a snowmobile trail off of monarch pass while smoking a cigarette.

Thirdly, tell your wife she needs to douche.

Heard Beck Weathers speak a few years ago. He said attempting Everest was the most selfish thing he had ever done to his family.

I wonder mountain is the highest actual climb, base to peak.

My brother climbed Mt Ranier. He's always been in good shape, but trained hard for 6 months. Had to turn back the first try due to weather, but made it the next year.

About the same for me.

And when I was 14,000 feet up, the air straight up hurt. I can't imagine 29k.

Two deaths from one expedition company is going to be scrutinized heavily, especially using a western expedition leader.

My BOL lives in Portland and he did Ranier. He has been a white water guide, climbing guide, fly fishing guide, etc.

He is in insane shape and lives to be outdoors. Its interesting to hear him talk about "average joes" who see a movie about rock climbing and then try to do some stupid shite IRL.
