Every single plaintiff lawyer has the hardest dick possible about self driving cars. Imagine a world where you could go after a major car manufacturer after every accident.

There is a far higher standard for automated driving, so this will set it back.
Also, the press release from Tesla said this was the first crash in 130 million miles while the U.S. average is 1 crash per 94 million miles. That is far less of a difference than I would have expected considering the Tesla is actually at fault. I want a self driving car badly so I can read while riding in my car, but I will require a far larger gap in crashes per miles driven than that.

What's the point of having an autopilot if I still have to pay attention while on the road?
I cannot upvote this enough. This is the sole reason I want autopilot. I want it to be like Minority Report or Timecop.

And how many highway deaths were there in fully human-controlled cars in the time period that this one took to happen? 30,000?
When the stats are in, the safety difference will be so great, that self driving cars will become a moral imperative. You will get a ticket for having your hands ON the wheel.

Most proponents of autopilot cars claim that it will make the road a safer place because the autopilot system will be better at driving and making decisions than a human. We obviously are not there yet.
My backup camera alerts for cracks in the driveway, sticks, and even shadows. Until the sensors get a lot better you'll be slamming on the brakes ever mile or two.

"Neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied," Tesla wrote.
How do they know the driver didn't notice it?

Tesla issued a press release providing said stats (number of deaths are irrelevant since there are so, so many more non-electric cars on the road):
The press release from Tesla said this was the first crash in 130 million miles while the U.S. average is 1 crash per 94 million miles.
I need a much, much higher improvement over non-autopilot then that for me to ever buy a self-driving car.

The driver must not have noticed it because he didn't hit the brakes either. That or he wasn't watching the road which is probably something he agreed to do when he accepted the terms to activate autopilot.

Considering that most people's first reaction is to slam on the brakes when faced with the prospect of driving straight into the side of a semi, it's a fair bet he didn't see it.

But um how does tesla know this?

I have no idea how to respond to this.

It is a beta release option yet they already have 130 million miles of fatality free autopilot operation???
Tesla must have one hell of a test program before they beta release.

first of all, everyone is assuming that even if he had his hands on the wheel and was in full control he could have done something to prevent the accident.
It seems to me that everyone is losing sight of the fact that THE VEHICLE AT FAULT was the vehicle that was not controlled by autopilot.
When did tesla say that autopilot could avoid collisions from other vehicles acting erratically. The car is still moving at 80 miles an hour and if a vehicle crosses the median the computer or a human might not have time to react.
I'll start to panic when an autopiloted car jumps the median and kills someone

The "black box" probably shows that the brakes were not applied manually or by the autopilot.

The May crash occurred when a tractor trailer drove across a divided highway, where a Tesla in autopilot mode was driving.
Seems like the driver would have died if they were operating the vehicle manually.
My vote is not at fault.

Make all tractor trailers travel at night.
You ok with everything that gets shipped being delayed twice as long. Think about that for a second...
