Kind of shitty situation honestly:

quote:

The May crash occurred when a tractor trailer drove across a divided highway, where a Tesla in autopilot mode was driving. The Model S passed under the tractor trailer, and the bottom of the trailer hit the Tesla vehicle's windshield.

"Neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied," Tesla wrote.

I mean if the driver himself couldn't even see it fast enough to break, it's kind of ridiculous to go all "shut 'em down" over it.

1. Make all Tractor Trailers automated
2. Make all tractor trailers travel at night.
3. ??????????/
4. Profit

Hell if you removed 18 wheeler traffic from I-12 at rush hour, it probably wouldn't be too bad.

Most proponents of autopilot cars claim that it will make the road a safer place because the autopilot system will be better at driving and making decisions than a human. We obviously are not there yet.

Connected Vehicles and increasing market penetration will fix vehicle to vehicle collisions like this

But has Tesla ever held autopilot out to be autonomous?

Not saying that's what happened in this instance, but it seems like a lot of the Tesla wrecks are from people treating autopilot like it's completely " set it and forget it" autonomous driving, which I don't believe it's designed to be.

I hope Elon comes up with a catchy term for this along the lines of "Rapid Unexpected Disassembly", or RUD.

Yea, its still user error. The technology is still a few years and millions of vehicles away from being reliable

The car doesn't even come with it activated. They have to manually activate it and agree to the terms. So people should be aware of its beta-ness. Horrible situation all around.

Some accidents are unavoidable no matter if it is a human or machine driving...

What's the point of having an autopilot if I still have to pay attention while on the road?

Not that I'm aware of. I'm just repeating the rhetoric that autonomous car fans spew. Like I said, we are simply not there yet in terms of safety.

Did Tesla confirm this with the dead driver? If Tesla said it, it must be legit.

Tesla said Thursday the death was "the first known fatality in just over 130 million miles where Autopilot was activated,"

this falls in line with the Deepwater Horizon. It sounds bad until you realize how many mile had been driven/wells had been drilled without an accident.

Yes, it's new. But, 1 death in 130 million miles is not that bad, right?
