Be prepared to spend a lot of time training him...seriously.

Start with simple tasks, sit, stay, etc. and develop your alpha role over time.

Once you know he has learned basic commands start enforcing the commands until he shows submission.

How to tell when a dog submits?
One way is to watch his mouth. When dogs are resisting your alpha role, at least mentally resisting, is evident because they will start yawning. Submission is exhibited by a closed mouth and then stick their tongue out indicating a swallow. Seriously. I didn't believe it when I first heard it but it is very evident when you start watching for it.

And the ultimate submissive posture for a dog is for it to lie on its back with you standing over him. In this position he feels very vulnerable but is showing you are trusted and are alpha.

ETA: Teaching a proper heel is also a great way to reinforce your roll...and a pinch collar is an excellent tool to prevent your dog from trying to lead you early on.

I wrap the leash around my waist, grab it with my left hand and pin my hand against my left butt cheek with no slack in the leash. As he pulls he will get pinched and be forced to stay behind you.

Once this becomes established increase slack etc...and anytime he starts to ease in front of you all you have to do is to do a 180 and he will be jerked around and pinched. He will learn to focus on you as he heels and follow your movements.

have a staring contest and establish the rules that if you win, you're the alpha and if he wins he does what he wants.

no man beat that dogs arse one good time and he'll be reminded.

I speak as an akita owner. my dog is about 85lbs of pure whoop your arse but he growled and snapped 1 time at me and I instantly knocked him across the face and he has never even considered it again.

im sure some peta person is gonna jump my arse for hitting my dog

Right?

I've never had to hit or punish or starve my dog to get her to behave. Definitely never choked the booboo.

I've seen some bigger dogs who really do challenge their owners at the alpha role. I've witnessed some of the fighting/starving/etc. first hand. My dog is only 12 lbs so if he is being a little bitch, I scold him and kennel him. That usually does the job.

This is mostly if you have a male dog...and a jar of peanut butter by your bed. And then you start dating some human and he tries to muscle in on the dog's territory. Completely different scenarios.

I mean, I have a chihuahua. I think we've all seen what he'll do to a mallard but that's it LINK

I just can't tell if people are making typical OT alpha/beta jokes

I just read over the rest of this thread. Christ, why would anyone want to own of these shitty dogs?
Seriously, how many posters had a story of a chow viciously attacking someone? Dog like that needs to be beaten within an inch of its life or culled

The way I see it you have two options, both of which I am doubting you can pull off because of your extreme betaness.

Option 1: Whoop his arse. I suggest wearing pants and long sleeves. Flip his arse over putting your knee in his sternum and put all your weight on him. At the same time take him by the throat with your dominate hand and grab a ear with the other. Stare him down, the more he fights the more you twist the ear and choke him. He is either going to pass the frick out - you win. Give in and look away - you win. Get away and tear you a new a-hole - your a pussy.

Option 2: Scare the shite out of him. Go to the pound and get an old ugly arse dog that no one wants. Take it home and be nice to it for a couple of days. Then take both dogs outside to play. Put your dog on a leash and have him right next to you. In front of you feed the pound dog, while he is eating and your dog is watching blow the pound dogs head off with a shotgun. Your dog will get the fricking point.

Disclaimer: Your GF will probably kick you in the nuts and leave you for doing either and being extreme beta.

I know, right? Living with a ticking time bomb that you have to feed and take care of. Chows, like other breeds are aggressive. If its a working dog, maybe. No way for a pet.

I was being a little sarcastic earlier in the threadas were a lot of others. The OP's last words were, "I'm going to try and pin him on his back." He hasn't been back since. Hope the guys ok.

Chows are on the same level of shittiness as a pit. I can't understand anyone owning them ESPECIALLY if they have kids.

I agree. Why would anyone want a dog they have to beat up?

My ex uncle just had his strung up outside of his trailer for protection. He lived in the country and was a paranoid meth head

Worse, IMO

I've known people with pits that gave them no trouble. But not chows

I'm thinking about sending my dog to obedience school. I couldn't find on the Google how much it would cost

I just want him to learn to tell me in some way that he needs to go outside and also not bark his fricking head off when I say outside
