Interesting. I may try it.
He just gets so fricking excited about going outside. I've gotten to where I stop the leashing, unlocking and opening the door process every time he barks and that helps. But once we get outside he yaps uncontrollably. I'm sure the neighbors love it at 4:30 am

Honestly, I've had three dogs, 105lbs, 90lbs and 80lbs, and never did the positive reinforcement bullshite work on them. It wasn't till I acted harshly(flipped them over and held them or actually struck them), at the appropriate time that they assumed beta. Eventually, they were well adjusted, tail wagging, well loved, happy dogs after that. One of them even had half chow in him.
If your GF has a problem with you doing what you have to in order to mitigate a real threat, dump her.

Why do you think that mongrel was given to you? Do you think people, on average, give away great dogs or problem dogs?

My aunt didn't want a dog in the first place. Her daughter rescued it from a dumpster but then got pregnant and didn't want it around her baby.
This dog is awesome. That is literally my only complaint. he doesn't make a single sound in the house unless I say outside. It's actually kind of eerie sometimes

Damn, this thread is still going. Been busy at work so I have not had a chance to see the dog in a couple of days. I talked to my g/f yesterday and I told her my plan. She said that the dog will not let me hold him down but he will let her. Next thing I hear is a growl through the phone and my g/f shouting. I asked what happened and she said she was holding him down on his back for 5 seconds and he "nipped her on the forearm". I said "he bite you". She said nip. We went back in forth over this term and she was getting upset. She knows I grew up in the country and I am much more harsh then she is. When a dog bites the next step is a bullet in the head but again this is not my dog. She sent me a picture and her forearm is red but there is no blood. I guess he was just struggling to get up and nipped her. This morning the dog did to her exactly what he has been doing to me. Would not come back to the house when she called him. She had to chase him now.
Going over there tomorrow while my g/f is at work. Will hold his arse down and make him summit. Then take him for a walk and make him walk in the middle of the street not sniffing anything. He will be downwind of me smelling my high protein diet. Probably will do the staring contest later that night and take his feeding bowl away during feeding time. All great suggestions that are non-violent.
Like I said in the first post. This is not my dog. I'm all for smacking around a dog when the time calls for it. My first initial response was to smack this dog but I'm glad I did not do this in front of my g/f. I don't want her to think I have anger issues. She has seen me blow up after watching football games. Doing these other methods will show her I'm the loving, caring, and patient type.
Ready for the beta comments. Yes, the dog is alpha right now and that is his house. That will change tomorrow. Maybe I will re-read some of the beta comments to pump me up right before I get ready to hold him down.

We are going to need you to go buy a gopro cam before you go over there tomorrow. I feel like you owe it to the OT for giving you all of this advice.

Dude, I know dogs.
That dog is gonna bite the shite out of you, IDC how much of a country harsh guy you are.
I'd be trying the other methods before I got aggressive with him.
Pla, I'd make sure the GF is worth all this.

Best case scenario now - The dog is cool letting you have a 3-way with it and your gf. Good luck.

You people are fricking weird.
quote:
The act of holding a dog down forcibly as a correction is generally called the "dominance down." It is inappropriate, ethologically absurd, and completely counterproductive when interacting with dogs. In a nutshell — don’t do it. Ever.
The fallacy of the dominance down first came out of the idea that submission is generally shown by canids when they expose their inguinal region (where the genitalia are) while they lie on the ground. So, someone thought that this action would be a good way to force dogs to be submissive and gain obedience by forcing them into this position. Complete bunk.
This is flawed in multiple ways.
quote:
First, before a dog offers submission to another dog, there are lots of other body language signals that are interchanged between the dogs. These signals are generally intended to defuse the situation to avoid a fight. If the fight can’t be avoided with these more benign signals, more obvious signals are offered, such as the belly up signal of inguinal exposure. Before an owner performs the dominance down, there are rarely any body language signals exchanged that would make any sense to the dog. This makes the interaction confusing for the dog. It comes out of the blue, which makes it scary, and for some dogs it looks like an invitation to fight.
Second, dogs offer this position naturally, they don’t forcibly toss each other to the ground without warning. Owners throw dogs to the ground without warning. This causes fear of the owner and puts dogs predisposed to aggression in a fighting mood. Consider how you would react if your spouse didn’t like what you were doing and decided to attempt to hold you down to "correct" you. How would you react? I would fight like there was no tomorrow and then call the police. This explains why so many owners are bitten while performing this misguided move.
quote:
Third, fear doesn’t equal obedience. It just equals fear. I would bet everything I own that what Sophie’s dad did didn’t cause her to be any more obedient when put in that same situation again. It did cause her to distrust him and fear him. These are two states of mind that generally cause disobedience, not obedience. The best trainers train their dogs to be obedient without ever attempting this move.
Finally, if you just won’t give up on the idea that your dog should submit to you, why don’t you just teach your dog to lie down on his side? Then, when you want to show him that he should be submissive, you can just ask for it. That seems a lot easier than holding your dog down. If you want to show your dog that you are more powerful, intelligent, and dominant, while also teaching him to be obedient, get a handful of treats. Then, use the treat to lure him into the down position. When he can reliably lie down on cue, you can start to use the treat to lure his head back toward his shoulder. When he is consistently falling onto his elbow, move the treat back to lure him onto his side. Then, pair this action with a verbal cue such as "lie on your side."
Have fun being a fricking weirdo and body slamming your dog that isn't a baby anymore and has grown to know you and your girlfriend is different ways.
