Do you do much work with him on tricks? Grab some treats, teach him some tricks/commands, and work with him every day. He'll eventually get used to taking commands from you. Also make sure you get to be the one that feeds him somewhat regularly.

This. Another thing alpha dogs don't like is to be stared at.

The second you get down to his level he is going to rip into you. And unless you are ready it's going to be ugly. Remember he isn't trying to reassure dominance in this case, he is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his role in the family. You don't seem like you are actually willing to physically take him on and if he beats you then you are really screwed.

I don't think he can take on the gf either. That's why she has the other guy who dominates her. He probably had smallcox as a child and is permanently scarred.

wrestle the dog and bite him. That will re-establish you as the alpha. Right now, he thinks he is the alpha because HE IS. You are treating him like you are beta so he will obviously respond that way.

As sarcastic as that is you actually make a good point. The OP cant do this alone. You may be able to do it when your gf isn't around but the second she comes back the dog is going to go into protect mode.

I would just start crating him any time he acts up.

YOU control when he comes out and when he goes in.

When YOU control access to his world, YOU become the alpha.

If he whines, cries or barks, so what?

That bastard dog will be so happy to see you when you open that crate door, he won't even remember what it was like to be alpha.

No fighting, no beating. CONTROL.

Trashy is as trashy does. OP you need to man up and handle this crap before you're posting on here about your GF getting railed by another guy, while high fiveing the chow, as it takes a dump on your picture. You sound more afraid of your GF than the chow. Take your lickings and whoop this dogs arse.

If he listens to your g/f and not you, then he views her as the alpha. Just bang her in front of him. Let him know where you stand in the pack.

This. But good luck getting him in there once he figures out he's gonna be stuck in there. Use treats I guess but like other posters have said those dogs are mean. Won't be like coaxing a lab into a kennel with a treat

The holding down method works but it can't be a wrestling match. Calmly lean him on his side and get him to submit. You'll know he's given in when his breathing is relaxed and he's not trying to get up without touching him.

Continually put your hand over his head when he's near letting him know that you are the leader.

None of this will matter if your GF doesn't continue with the training you are doing though. It has to be consistent.

Other tips: Never allow him to charge an open/opening door. Put him in sit/stay prior to addressing the door.

If he's food obsessive train with treats then ween him off. Dogs are dumb and he'll continue to think he'll get a treat. You'll be trading food rewards for positive reinforcement rewards.

I just had to do this with a rescue dog and it was a pain in the arse but he finally learned. Problem is, I'm the only one in the house that expects that POS dog to behave so I'm always in training mode.

If none of that works, beat the shite out of him.

Speaking of, I would just take a bicycle chain to his arse until he knows who's boss.

Well it's a mix, for starters. Breeders usually don't sell mixed. So, it's a shelter dog and all shelter dogs must be saved, first and foremost.

Good choice. I love finding other uses for common house hold items.

Not trying to derail the thread but, I'm heading to Gatlinburg and Cades Cove Valentine's Day weekend.

This is excellent advice. I also think the main problem here is the GF's dominance over OP. OP, I'm sorry to say that, you sir, are a beta.

Take that fricker out of the equation. Chow is a terrible breed. I'm sure it's been mentioned but your ole lady sounds like a dumbass

My neighbor saw me chasing my Chow one morning and decided to hide.behind a house and try to grab him. Had to take the poor guy get stitches in face, both shoulders , both arms and chest. I told him so many times not to try to catch him because he bites.
