I am curious as to just how much time one would save if he walked on an escalator instead of standing still. hell, you are not on the thing more than 45 seconds at a time, so you are complaining about a difference of 5 seconds?

Sometimes those seconds make all the difference. Maybe not in a mall type setting where you likely have some free time if you're there in the first place.

But when going to work in the morning by train it makes time a very valuable commodity

I know in DC people get pissed off if people to the left aren't walking. The right is for standers the left for walkers.

If we were talking about a mall escalator that only goes up one floor, you'd be right. It's a short trip and nothing is going away if you're a couple of seconds later.

I live in the DC metro area, where the subway escalators are some of the longest in the world and if you are delayed by five seconds, then you get to wait ten minutes for the next train.

I cannot begin to count the number of times I leaped off the escalator, ran past the clueless tourists who'd blocked the way, ran for the train and had the door slam shut right in front of me. Then I look up at the sign, which says "Vienna 12".

It is not a difference of five seconds.

It sounds like you have a problem managing time, not people on an escalator.

You're taking the escalator down to catch a train. Someone is in the way so you lose time getting to the platform. The train pulls off before you can board but for the jackass that blocked you. The next train isn't coming for another five minutes. So you didn't lose five seconds, you lost five minutes and five seconds.

Edit: should have read foshizzle's post before posting. He gets it. Hell, anyone who lives in a city with a metro system gets it.

I'm scared of heights, so I get very nervous on long elevators. It takes all my willpower not to look down and have a full blown panic attack. I might cut someone if they try to pass me in that situation.

Flat conveyor belts at airports are different than the typically escalator. For several reasons that I shouldn’t have to explain. So I agree with you. I’m the same. But the left/right positioning should be honored regardless.

Personally, I stand solid on escalators and walk on the conveyor belts.

I'll add that there are phone apps that tell me a train is arriving within the next three minutes before I even get on the escalator.

That gets my hopes up that I can catch the train before I run into the tourists.

Alone yes. If I'm taking my mom out of some Sunday shopping I will stay with her because I don't trust these mall fricks around my saint of a mother.

What long arse escalator are you riding that gives you enough time to get this irritated?

Metro/subway and airport escalators can be pretty long.

It's worse when fat fricks stop on the moving walkway in airports.

This may not be a problem in the future as airports are starting/considering removing those.

Reason: The shop merchants want them removed so you have to walk by their stores and perhaps buy something. At the airport, you aren't the consumer, you're the product.
