Mine is pretty bad, but after years of batting with her through my wife, after we had kids she's gotten a lot better. The threat of you aren't welcome here if you continue to act like you are with grandkids is pretty stern.

Most of the problem is not only the mil being awful, but the wives taking their side or refusing to see how bad they really are.

I have been married for 30+ years, and mine has been great every step of the way. Hell, I even offer them to go on vaca with the fam. I couldn't have done better.

Tell the MIL to get lost. Tell her she's no longer welcome around your family.

100% serious unfortunately. She pretty much stayed in the middle of our business 24/7 and if my ex-wife and I had an argument about something, I would get a phone call about it or god forbid a visit to my office occasionally. I tried diplomacy for a couple of years and finally cracked and dropped a nuke. Told them both to get fricked. I'm happier than I've been since college.

I loved her with all of my heart. I have her photo framed on the center of my mantle. She was a Saint. I did nothing to deserve her wisdom and grace. Just the dumb luck of marrying her daughter.

Just to normalize things, I'm consistently respectful to her Dad. But I'm not starting the fan club.

Yep, I like both of my in-laws. We've actually been living with them for a couple months while we close on our house. I'm ready to move into my own house, but that isn't because I have a problem with them.

I didn't like any of my previous SOs parents, but that's because they were stupid.

My inlaws are great.

My mom, on the other hand, in a terrible mother in law. She's been a source of sorrow and pain over the years, so much so that I'm not motivated to maintain a relationship with her any longer.

Really?

I think I would just try to be elsewhere when they came to town. When your wife asks, tell her why.

Any party involved who tries to force her to choose SHOULD be the one who loses. Unless you are a dirtbag and beating her or drugs etc. then some families have to lay down the law and step away.

Had a buddy whose daughters husband beat the piss out of her and held a knife to her throat hard enough to leave a mark. He got there when the cops did. A month later the girl is bringing the guy over for a BBQ. They were like "nope". You can't unring that Bell.

My mother-n-law has gotten better over the years, but during our first year of marriage, she was absolute hell to get along with, she's one of those control freaks. When my father-n-law died (God rest his soul), she calmed down a lot, he was the only one that could diffuse her. She don't bother anymore.

I don't think any death would be untimely with that consumption.

German accents tend to do it for me. Your MIL an unattractive beached beluga whale? I suppose that would say more about your wife than anything.
