Ok folks, who’s gotten a divorce with minor children. How was your experience dealing with lawyers, custody, and financial support. I (male) filed and merely want equal custody and not to be completely screwed financially. Just want to end things as easy as possible and not fight over things. Primary bread winner by a long shot but STBX works as well and minor child is in full time child care. Marriage was approximately 8 years.

I’ll tell you exactly what my attorney told me on my first consult two years ago: “you’re screwed “. Expect 6 months of spousal support and then the REAL pain begins.
ETA: I THINK that being married less than 10 years lessens the amount of your retirement that she can take but I might be wrong.

Depends on where you’re divorcing, really.

Guy I know got cut off sexually by his wife. He works she's a stay at home mom.
He got tired of no secs. Left. Filed divorce. She got it all. He's paying for her to live and do nothing.

Which is why I totally support secret infidelity over divorce.

Anyway good luck.

One of my good friends got a divorce a couple years ago (he initiated). Said the same thing you did. Got bent financially and still got fricked over in custody hearings. Fight for yourself. Especially if things aren’t ending amicably.

You need to find a side gig that pays cash and keep it off the books. Otherwise, for the next several years you’ll have to eat ramen noodles and live in a shithole, low rent apartment if you want to be able to save anything.

Honestly, in your situation, you’re better off just going to jail until your kids are 18.

Just know she will not be out of your life. Divorcing her just gives you less control. She is going to be in your life forever because of the kids. You need to play the tape out bro.

Also, financial considerations aside, your 8 year old is going to take this hard. Be prepared to get counseling for them if you actually go through with this. My youngest two still struggle and my divorce was relatively drama free.

If you’re in BR you’re prob not going to have to pay alimony longer than a few months if at all. Child support is a weird formula where they take both of y’all’s income into account. You should be able to calculate it if you google.

My hubby tried to give away the farm to his ex but the judge wouldn’t sign off on it.

Should have gone with that throwaway except would probably get side tracked with gay jokes.
