Died or Passed...what do you say?

My wife says "Passed Away, Passed". I've always said "died". She says her version is less crass. Of course I disagreed. After the conversation I started to pay more attention and have noticed that talking heads on the tube generally say passed as do most people in day to day conversation.
When did died or dying become a bad word?

I usually say died if it is sudden and passed if it is foreseen.

It probably is.

It's not a bad word.

Saying "passed" IS less crass.
It being less crass than "died" doesn't make it a bad word....not everything is good or bad.

You're simply debating semantics. Passed away has a more delicate connotation, but neither one is really more correct.

When talking about someone you know or to someone that knew the person you say passed.
When referring to a stranger you say died.
ETA: it's science.

To me "died" implied it was sudden or unexpected. Passed away implies it was foreseen or anticipated for some time.

I think "passed away" sounds more respectable, so I go with that

I understand that thought process. I've just always used died. When speaking of my parents I'll say "When Momma died or before Dad died". Never really thought about it until the lovely Mrs. schooled me.

I can see that.
When I talk about the specific time period or fact of my mother's death, I usually say, "my mom died suddenly."
But if I'm asked about my family or something unrelated to her actual death, I often say, "my mom passed away a few years ago."
Of course, it took me several months to even be able to say dead, died, or death. Before that, it was, "when my mom had her stroke."
