They are not subject to variances in government reimbursement, unlike physicians, who (as hospitalist anyway) have to treat indigent patients and Medicaid patients. No EMTALA laws for dentists, obviously. Good for them--I certainly couldn't do it (dealing with teeth all day).
This. Not as bound to the pt's as we are. I've had pt's with terrible abscesses and no on will see then. The oral surgeon? Nope. Instead we have to medicate them until we can get that rotten arse tooth extracted. No compassionate care. At least not around here. And can't pull a tooth? Think again. How do you guys think those teeth get magically pulled? And for no charge most of the time.
And I do envy your organizations. Ours have assraped the profession and sold us down the river. We're legislated by a bunch of academic dipshits that have zero experience in healthcare. Yes, we are jealous of you guys and how your reimbursements are done. But us younger docs got no say and have to deal with the shitass consequneces. Just thought I jump in and bust y'alls balls a bit.
Ruzil...I thought we decided to be friends. Maybe not. Perhaps if I stay out of the dental threads.

going to be "the future" and we were going to be fricked and controlled just like doctors were. If you didn't get on board, you were going to be left out in the cold. But the vast majority of dentists fought it and simply refused to accept those plans. A small number of dentists jumped on all of those plans. Some did well, but had to work their asses off to make good money. Patients realized it was worthless to have dental insurance with no dentists on it (or at least very limited options). So in the end, we work for cash. Or insurance pays 100% on preventive, 80% on routine care, and 50% on major - and the patient pays the rest. We all took a risk by resisting, and it paid off. tldr - Doctors bend over and grab ankles for the insurance industry, dentists prefer vag.
I agree. Most of us still like vag though and walked into this shitstorm. I actually think we may see medicine head this way. Make pt's pay the part not covered by insurance up front. Problem is if they can't pay, they could die. So not quite the same. And like I said, my exposure to dentistry is local. And our schools are now trying to flood the markets and add NP's PA's. Ever wonder how they're gonna screw yu guys?

I take you don't own a business. The $188K isn't his gross.
I could sell lemonade on the side of the road and gross $188K. That's not very much at all.

Of course we did.
If your patients don't mind driving a bit, I'll snag their teeth. Just ask KingRanch, he can vouch for me.

A good looking set of teeth is now more important than it ever was in terms of career.

I'm at the office right now to see an emergency patient. But 95% of dentists won't do this for their patients. Forget about the corporates doing this too. Hardly anyone in those outfits really cares, nor are they set up so that someone can go in and render care without a staff. But yes, many solo dentists leave their people hanging in times of need.
Let's not forget, people are to blame as well... Putting problems off until they are HUGE problems on the weekend.

which is what I was saying, it wasn't clarified that 188 was his salary, and no I don't currently own a business, but I have in the past

Lol a good first year associate can land 120k-160k pretty easily.
A rare few can get 200k their first year out.
After a few years of associating you build or buy your own practice(buying being the easiest option) then after that you can work 3 or 4 days a week and pull 250k+ no problem.
Also. I start dental school in 8 days!

Are you talking about dentists who won't see their patients in times of emergency, or dentists who won't blow their family time on the weekend to see someone who doesn't have a regular dentist and hasn't been to the dentist in 20 years, who will make you see them on the weekend, bring in your assistant with you since you open yourself up to liability if you see them alone, get a prescription for antibiotics and pain meds, then not show up for their appointment after the swelling goes down, yet call you day and night for weeks trying to refill the pain meds (after they've pretended they were your office and tried calling it in to the pharmacy themselves)? Because those are two different stories. I once saw an emergency patient after 10 pm on Christmas Eve. Her ancient crown came off and her relatives were making fun of her. Of course, it came off because there was nothing left underneath it, so I spent an hour building up her tooth and making a temporary (at no charge). Needless to say, she ended up being one of my best referral sources - and she worked at the bank so she came into contact with half of the parish. Just about every dentist I know will bend over backwards for their patients in times of true emergency. But the irresponsible people and meth-tooth druggies need look elsewhere. Though I've never refused antibiotics to anyone who called my office with swelling.

These. They seem to be the rule instead of the exception around here. Every area is different. I tend to generalize unfairly when I'm ranting.

I am more than happy to help out a patient in need of emergency care. I can get access to my practice management software practically anywhere as long as I have web access.
I leave my cell number on my office after hours message. I usually don't answer that phone but will call back anyone that leaves me a message. The druggies generally, unless desperate, don't leave messages. Good people who need help usually do and get a call back from me if I am in town or a staff member if not. Works for me.

My dentist's office is open 6 days a week. Dude is like 38 yrs old and he actually told me that he is only in the office 1 day a week. Says he can't be out bird dogging other practices if he's always working. Dude is up to about 15 practices right now. I'm sure some of the Baton Rouge area dentists know who I'm talking about. He's definitely a business man first and dentist second.
