I'm thinking I want to get involved in the lifestyle. I've done some initial research and I'm eyeballing the Merkur 34C eith proraso eucalyptus and menthol cream.

What do you experts suggest for the brush? From what I've been seeing some of them are priced outrageously.

Lastly, what aftershave do you suggest?

P.S. yes I've done the research 30 degree angle, WTG, XTG, ATG, etc.

I use the Merkur 38C, which is basically the longer handle 34C. Proraso is a great start, either in the cream or tub of soap form. The soap isn't a hard soap and performs just as well.

I use a cheap brush. I have a badger from SimplyBeautiful on Amazon that was about $10, and an Omega Pro 48 that was about the same price. For aftershave I really just use cold water.

Go with the Merkur 34C. I love mine. Proraso is also great. Get a best badger brush or a synthetic. Don't get a 100% pure badger. That's code for the shittiest roughest hair from a badger.

Have you looked into blades. In my opinion, Wilkinson Swords are a good starting point. They are cheap, German, and they are right in the middle of the sharp scale. I use Feathers now, but I'm glad I learned with Wilkinson Sword.

The reddit r/wicked_edge has tons of useful information. I would look over there for suggestions.

I use a Nivea Shave Balm for sensitive skin that you can find at most grocery stores. An alum bar is also nice.

I haven't really looked into this. I was thinking of maybe getting a sampler. I hear people rave about feathers and Gillette also I believe.

There has already been a huge thread on this subject, I think if you search "men's grooming" it should pop up.

I know this is listed as a pre-shave, but I use it for both pre & aftershave and it is awesome as an aftershave: Proraso. Makes you feel alive.

I use THIS Parker shave brush. And THIS Taylor of Old Bond shave soap. My technique is to just get a little dollop of the soap and put it in the brush and make the lather on my face. Everyone has their own way of that.

As for blades: some of the highest reviewed are the Astra, Feather, and Persona. I didn't care for the Persona and settled on the Merkur blades. The sample packs have a tendency to give you a lot of crappy ones.

I use a Merkur 38c but choke up so much on the handle that a 34c would be sufficient.

I just bought this brush for my father. He seems to like it.

ETA: I use Skin Bracer aftershave. Cooling Blue was my favorite scent, but I can't find it locally anymore, so I just use the Original (green). It's not as good, but it's what I've got.

I've also heard nothing but good things about Whipped Dog brushes. Their silvertip badger only runs about $40.

WTF?

The shaving lifestyle? Does shaving with and old time razor change your life?

I recommend Astra blades for starting out. Just a step under a Feather blade for sharpness. And less than $10 for 100 on Amazon.

I wasn't trying to be an arse when I suggested looking up the other grooming thread, there is a ton of info in there! It caused me to spend more money on my new found hobby I like the Taylor of old bond street saddle soap scent and the feather blades. The scent of the old "Clubman" brand aftershave brings back memories so that what I use. The wife hated it at first but she actually admitted the other day it has grown on her.

I should also disclaim I've been using a Braun series 7 for atleast 8 years now so preparing my face for the raping it's about to take. I can never get a close shave with an electric. I must shave daily for my job.

I used to use an electric Panasonic; my face felt way worse after using it than using my DE razor. I shudder even thinking about having to use my Gillette 5 blade.

Cheap Tweezerman badger brush is all I've used. I like a brush to actually scrub in while lathering. I keep a small mason jar of 91% rubbing alcohol to dip the razor head in after each use. Dip the brush every couple of uses too.

I'm not gonna lie. I thought I was on the recruiting board and this was about a safety named Razor Advice.

I went with the Edwin Jagger 89L and I'm very happy with it. I had a problem with razor burn using the multi blade razors. Since switching to DE safety razor my skin looks and feels better. I was worried ab slicing my face off the first time but after a month of shaving I have yet to cut myself. Watch a few youtube videos for proper technique. Recently ordered the Parker synthetic brush and tobs Jermyn st.. I will never go back to multi blades. I would consider the EJ 89L
