I have use that razor and shaving cream.

Merkur 34c & Proraso Green n White cream.

The razor is solid, and the Proraso cream is perfect. When I started out, I had a puck shaving soap and mug. It worked, but the Proraso cream in the tube is far easier..and I find it makes a better lather.

I use the cheap Tweezerman brush, and alternate between Shark, Astra, and Feather blades. I like all three, but the Feather blades are probably my favorite.

About the Merkur razors, I used the long handle one and after two years the threaded post just pulled out of the top piece. I did not tighten down any more than usual and one day it just came apart. I had a spare Merkur adjustable though. I like Mitchell's Wool Fat shaving soap. It makes a really thick lather. C.O. Bigelow shaving cream from Bath and Body is the best IMO.

Question;

I watched a few YouTube vids to see what the safety razor was about and these guys would lather, shave, rinse 2 - 3 times. Is this normal? When I shave with a single edge dipisable lather, shave, rinse and im done.

EJ DE89 is a good razor, too. I started with a Merkur 38 and it is my current travel razor.

I started with Omega soap (by Proraso), then switched to the Proraso green cream and ultimately Proraso red (sandalwood).

My starter kit brush has given me 2+ years of service at this point. I may splurge on a brush next year, but you can get decent brushes in the $15 to $40 range - no need to go higher than that for the initial set up - just be choosy about which inexpensive brush you go with.

I don't use aftershave - although I occasionally hit it with witch hazel if I have redness or a flock of weepers, etc.

(And brah - you didn't mention blades at all. )

Insofar as the "new fangled" razors don't shave, as much as scrape your face, yeah. I just had the best shave of my life last night. I simply cannot imagine going back to the high dollar, primarily plastic monstrosities with which I used to shave my face.

I still shave my head with plastic disposables, but I use the HeadBlade setup for that. If I thought I could get away with shaving my head with a DE (and some guys do) and not have to go to the E/R, I would.

I think I'm going to go with the astras first and move on to the feathers.

Here's something to keep in mind with blades - and the sampler isn't a bad idea for this reason.

Some beards are going to have best results with a mild razor and a sharp blade. Others will do better with a more moderate or even agressive razor, and a milder (or coated, I should say) blade.

And you're correct to go with a more forgiving blade before moving to Feathers, but bear in mind that - you're shaving with a very sharp blade - there are just minor variations among the various makers and types of blades.

You can gash yourself pretty bad with a "milder" blade, just as you are not going to kill yourself with a Feather. Get your technique down, first, while you're experimenting with the sampler blades. You'll quickly get an idea as to which blades work best on your beard.

ETA: And get/keep a stiptic pencil - best $1 to $2 investment any shaver ever made...

You are making a wise choice.

I like the Merkur razors, I've had my HD since 2006 and never wished to try anything else.

Definitely try different blades to find your best. I'm a Feather man and will never use anything else.

If you are dead set on trying Proraso, just go to Bath and Body and get their CO Bigelow, which I'm almost positive is made by Proraso.

Regarding aftershave, I really like Trumper's Skin Food, but most simple products will work fine if you are shaving correctly.

Give Em's Place a shot as a one-stop shopping destination. I've bought everything from there for about 5 years. Her custom aftershaves are fantastic.

That's one thing I've noticed is there are a ton of small little places that sell products. You can find one thing here but not setting else you need. Who really knows if any of these places are reputable unless someone has had prior experience.

I get everything from Amazon except my stiptic pencil (Walgreens) and scuttle (dirtybirdpottery.com).

Get a sampler. Its hard to make a recommendation for blades because I think different blades are good for different people. I like the Gillette Silver Blue the best.

I think I have everything picked out at this point minus the brush. The two that are at the foremost of my mind are...

Out of those two, definitely go with the Parker synthetic. 100% badger is rough as shite, and it pretty much defeats the purpose of using a brush. They put 100% to sound good, but badgers have some rough hairs in spots that they use. Best badger > Pure badger.

But I highly suggest this brush, which the shaving world loves and is going for cheap right now ($30 compared to $50+).

I've also heard nothing but good things about Whipped Dog brushes. Their silvertip badger only runs about $40.

I own one. You aren't going to get a better brush for $40.

How long on average have you guys noticed these brushes last? Also probably a silly question for example the astra SP blades how many shaves with a moderately dense beard before you replace the blade?

Brush can last forever. See them in antique stores all the time. Brush looks nasty but just because of lack of use for years.

I'd say 4 shaves on the blades. Good average number. Some get more. Feathers can get more IMO because they are so damned sharp to begin with you can get one more than others?

Hey LSU

Just to high jack for a second

Have you tried Capone's barber shop right by memorial city mall. Looks like a pretty cool shop. Thinking of giving them a try at a shave

Yep. $16 and straight razor (Shavette) to the neck. Very cool place. I read a magazine from 1965 while I wait. Make an appointment and bring cash. No cards. He also has begun to stock products for wet shavers. Musgo, Truefitt and Hill. Supposed to be getting more.
