Don't have to be a cop to feel that way. I own multiple AR's and I would not in a million years feel like I should walk down the street with one on my back. And if I did, I would hope that a police officer would question it, and I would politely show him my ID.

This. Of course, anyone who has a legitimate purpose in carrying an AR through the streets of Houston would gladly provide ID, answer some questions and be on their way in less than a minute. It's only the people who are doing it "because the can" that leads to the type of confrontation you see in the video.

Yes. If you're legally doing it you have nothing to worry about. Show your ID and go on your way.

That's the stupidest thing I've read on TD this week.
Congrats.

It's not that stupid. I've never been questioned for carrying a gun before, but I've also never carried an AR down a city block. However, if I ever were to be stopped and questioned, I would much rather cooperate for a minute, show some ID and be on my way. Believe it or not, not all cops are part of some large conspiracy to take your guns. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that a large majority of cops actually support the second amendment.

Cop was completely in the right. Terry stops fall short of probable cause for an arrest; but the cop neither showed up to arrest or detain the guy until he walked away from the cop.

A man carrying a large weapon in broad daylight and walking away from a cop is reasonable suspicion for a "Terry type" stop.

Also, where the hell in the video does the officer "go off" on this poor open carry advocate?

If you are walking around an urban setting with a rifle you should be stopped and checked out.

Only time I ever open carried was in the weeks after Katrina and I kept my State drivers license in a lanyard around my neck too.
I didn't want to get shot for carrying, there was a ton of ID checks at that time, especially when going through checkpoints manned by NY state police and other yankee cops.

You gotta police state logic.

You're not being detained but you aren't free to go because if you walk away then you'll be detained.

How about a happy medium where you act like a member of a civilized fricking society and cooperate with those whose balls are held to the fire when people get killed and the crime rates go up?

Answer the question. Why is he walking around downtown Houston in a skirt strapping an AR 15?

Cause he's a freaking nut job, that's why.

So you guys think it's cool to perform a Terry stop on a pickup truck with two rifles in the back-window rack and a Stars and Bars sticker who's driving around the Fifth Ward of Houston?

That is totally different to me. Walking down the street in a kilt with a rifle on your back in an urban setting is abnormal and should be further looked into.

Exactly, bizarre behavior with a firearm itself justifies a stop. No rational person can argue this guy shouldn't have been stopped and questioned.

You wouldn't call driving around with two rifles in your rear window with a Stars and Bars sticker on the window -- circling through the Houston hood -- suspicious?

Then that is grounds to be stopped and detained. It's not hard to figure out. This isn't a utopian paradise where every single person with a weapon on their back is doing it for Youtube fame or to be some voice in a 2nd amendment movement. Some people actually do bad shite with their guns and it's a cop's job to differentiate between the two while walking the line of not fricking offending anyone.

While suspicious, I don't think it rises to the level of walking on the streets of houston with an AR slung around your shoulder. To me, it comes down to "could their be a rational explanation for why this person is carrying this firearm?" If yes, I see no further need to question them. If no, I am fine with the questioning.

Again, I am not advocating that this is what the letter of the law is or what the letter of the law should be. Just that in an ideal world, I wouldn't have a problem with cops stopping people and questioning them when they are carrying guns when it doesn't make much sense to do so or in a way that doesn't make much sense.
