Don't know when or why we quit fat shaming people but we need to start again. Why celebrate an unhealthy lifestyle? All this does is encourage fatties to stay fat. We really should be shaming them into healthier life choices. We do it with smokers, why not fatties?

Exactly. It's pathetic. Their argument is "I don't want to exercise the small modicum of will power and self respect it takes to avoid being significantly overweight. Therefore, YOU have to love me for who I am and can't criticize me whatsoever for being fat. It's not my fault I don't want to avoid the gallon of Ranch dressing on my salad!"

For the record, the chick on the SI cover is not just "curvy". She's fricking big! Like between 180 lbs and 190 lbs big! Women's bodies aren't made to carry that much weight naturally. It takes a lot of not giving a shite about your diet and exercise to get that big.

Body mass index (BMI) is an index widely used to define obesity. BMI does not always accurately indicate the degree of fatness. The degree of central fat distribution may be more closely tied to metabolic risks than BMI. Measurement of the degree of central fat distribution thus appears to be important for the early detection of subsequent health risks, even among those of normal weight. Waist-to-height ratio (W/Ht) corresponds better to metabolic risk than BMI. LINK

We need a fat tax.

If the US government is going to be subsidizing health care and medical treatment for everyone then it has a stake and a say in how a person eats and exercises.

Someone does not lift......

I'm 6'0", 225 lbs, with a 35 inch waist. Definitely not over weight because my BMI is 19.

Carry on.

She is 68 years old. That photo was allegedly taken in February 2016. Granted she's got makeup on, but for 68 years old, well, she hasn't taken the worst from Father Time.

Actually, your BMI is 30.5 and you are "obese"

However, your weight to height is:

Waist size doesn't generally increase at the ratio you think it does when compared with height. I also wouldn't exactly call myself "skinny". Definitely lean though.

The word they use is "slender" actually. So I would say that makes more sense.

MEN

Ratio less than 35: Abnormally Slim to Underweight
Ratio 35 to 43: Extremely slim
Ratio 43 to 46: Slender and Healthy
Ratio 46 and 53: Healthy, Normal Weight
Ratio 53 to 58: Overweight
Ratio 58 to 63: Extremely Overweight/Obese
Ratio over 63: Highly Obese

An individual 6'0", 225 pounds is clinically obese, with a BMI of 30.5. BMI does overestimate overweight and obesity in athletes.

If you mean your "bodyfat" percentage is 19, that does not mean you do not meet the clinical screening criteria of overweight and obesity.

I'm not on the "BMI only" bandwagon, ignoring common sense, but many folks confuse BMI and bodyfat - they're 2 different things.

That would be incredibly fat. I have a thin waist.

As you said, people carry weight differently.

I dont get it. Do you carry fat in your head, arse, legs and chest without your midsection?

The reason the waist size is so important is because that is where most fat is stored which leads to complications down the road
