For South Louisiana driving. Runs about an extra 2k as an option. Very slight hit to MPG.

Depends on the vehicle and it's intended use.

AWD systems are ideal for wet, icy and roads with loose surface material. Some of them are off-road capable, but a lot of that depends on the underpinnings of suspension, ground clearance, skid plates, etc.

So, if you are driving on wet, slippery or icy roads on a regular basis, you will notice improved capabilities with AWD, IMHO.

I don't think it's particularly worth it down here. Assuming that the base option is front wheel drive, that can get you out of most of the trouble you get into on our flat roads.

SUV and normal driving. No off roading or towing or anything like that.

Not 4 wheel drive either: all wheel drive.

I have 4 wheel drive and the mountain/snow steering package, but I live where I have to drive mountains to get to civilization.

I guess if you live on a farm you could need it.

I can't see the value for someone who drives on paved roads or shell roads.

Honestly, a locker is more important than AWD for this particular application, IMHO.

I would assume the other option is RWD, if so I personally wouldn't spend the extra $2K on AWD. That's about two sets of tires worth of savings.

averaged 30k miles per set of tires on a 2012 Durango AWD when I was in PA.

they weren't the best tires though

AWD is for women.

Get a GX460, Land Crusier, or LX570 - FULL TIME 4x4

Depends. They're much faster at takeoff and great for rain/snow driving, but I'm not sure you'd necessarily need it where you're located.

We live on the coast in MS and have an awd suv.

The only time I notice it is when the roads are wet and if you are driving on a gravel/wet rutted road. Really depends on how important that is to you. My particular vehicle came with it as std equipment so it didn't cost us anymore when buying.

I do feel safer on wet roads but I'm not sure it's worth $2k

It is possible that it will cost more to maintain over the lifetime of the vehicle. Transfer case, cv shafts, more sensors and electronics etc.

all this is true too. I was driving on ice in SW PA up mountain roads. Just don't see the need in S. LA

AWD in S LA nope I don’t see the need and I lived in LA for 11 yrs. I am in southern Canada and do I need AWD .... only for 5-10 days but when I need it its really nice to have. First awd was a RAV and its great in snow, just got a Subaru and expect it to be the same.
When I rent cars in winter especially up north I always rent AWD
No one can drive on ice w/ or w/o AWD

I believe AWD vehicles retain higher resale value, so there's that.
