I would say that unless you drive in areas where icy roads are a problem (or at least a possibility), that AWD is a bad idea. Higher up front cost, worse gas mileage, and higher repair costs make it a bad idea if it is not going to provide much benefit.

You realize the difference between AWD and 4WD is just the percentage right? I mean they are basically the same thing, the difference is that AWD is like 20% to the front tires and 4wd is like 40%+? I'm not a pro on this, but that is my basic understanding.

Usually AWD is based off a front wheel drive architecture, which means having the engine mounted transversely. That's not always the case (GMT800 GMC Denalis come to mind as an exception). Basically, AWD usually will drive like a FWD vehicle until slip occurs.

Had both 2WD and AWD vehicles, when I lived in BR. Could not tell the difference between the two. I would not pay $2K for it.

I love the way my AWD Acura suv grips the road during a storm, but it's not worth the wasted gas.

Much depends on what you want out of it. I was looking for performance and originally wanted rwd. I found that AWD can greatly impact driving performance even on dry pavement, with the right system. With Acura's system you definitely feel the difference on twisty roads or powering through turns (I have a prior generation TL with awd and manual trans). I guess that's why the call it "super handling" awd.
Even a quick turn at an intersection is fun, and cloverleaf onramps are a hoot, with your right foot helping to steer the car. It's fun even in the rain (but doesn't do a thing to help you stop).
But yes, it costs more to buy and maintain, and fuel economy is a bit lower.
For awd geeks with 9 minutes to kill, here's a detailed summary of fwd/rwd/4wd/sh-awd:

I watched a FWD civic climb a huge hill a few years ago covered in ice.
Dude had skills. minutes later two big trucks kept sliding back down it.
just because you can't do it doesn't mean others can't.
I didn't even attempt it. Took a different route.

Nothing but normal everyday driving. Of course we get ton of rain in the summer.

That and it is permanently limited to that percentage. As in the most you will ever get is 20 or 30 % to one of the sets of wheels, whereas with 4x4 and the correct setup of differentials, you can get all the power to the wheel(s) with traction. If you don't plan to go off road and just want better wet weather or snow traction, AWD is fine. If you are leaving the pavement, 4x4 is better.

I didn't like that I couldn't turn mine to just 2wd. on that durango model it was all time AWD. i think it was 30% power went to the front wheels. it did great in snow though. better than my truck due to the great weight distribution
