This could also be used by employers who don't necessarily care if their employees smoke in their free time, but don't want high employees at work. Now they either have to choose to test for it or not.

This is going to bring in insane amounts of money for police departments

If it only detects if it is in your system and not if you are high then boom, if you smoked a week ago and get pulled over and blow and then you're going to jail

For driving sober

This sounds like bad news to me

It's be a lot cooler if it did.

This is great. Honestly, with tests like this I am even more pro to making it legal. The only negative I saw was people driving under influence and no way to tell if they were high while driving.

I will just refuse and go to jail then. let the lawyers fight it.

I need the Doctor more than the pot right now.Pain Management.

When my family obligations here end I'll move to a Medical Marijuana State.

Good. People shouldn't drive under the influence of anything, including legally obtained marijuana.

So if you've smoked weed in the past ~30 days, you get to go in for a blood test. I don't see this as an infringement at all

I guess it depends how this new method works. If it detects thc from a week before, its bullshite imo. If it only detects thc from a few hours ago, its good imo

Will this be able to differentiate between being high while driving and simply having marijuana in your system?

Apparently not. From the article
quote:

The prototype device, which could be tested on humans as soon as next year, is not designed to detect how stoned a driver is, but simply to confirm whether they have THC in their system.

What a worthless test. People are going to have to get blood tests because they smoked pot a few days before they get pulled over.

Exactly. It's pointless because we already have ways of seeing if you have thc in your system. The problem is being able to tell when the last time someone smoked.

I'd assume it works in the window of your typical saliva test that can see back about 12 hours on average (thanks google).

It's not like a piss test that tests for metabolites that stay in your system far longer than active THC does.

From a 2013 High Times article:
quote:

What they found was that while every breath sample collected tested positive for THC almost immediately following the participant getting high, the only group to maintain a positive test after four hours were the everyday stoners. Interestingly, while 90% of the part-time smokers tested positive for THC within an hour of smoking, none of them tested positive after about 90 minutes. This means that a marijuana breathalyzer manufactured under these principles would only be effective for somewhere between 30 minutes to two hours immediately following a person’s participation in an old-fashioned toke and choke ritual.
High Times

It still sounds like a go/no-go breath test. Also, I haven't seen anything that indicates if breath tests give an indication for ingested MJ products. Police are still using observation to evaluate your state of intoxication. Here's my all-time favorite drug testing method, so be sure you practice in advance:

DRE - Drug Recognition Experts
The bottom line is if you fail, then you will get a blood test. In Colorado, the legal limit is 5 ng.
