Driving under the influence of drugs is illegal, but until now police officers have had to wait for blood tests to confirm whether a driver is high, which can take up to 24 hours.
Now, scientists have developed a cannabis-detecting breathalyser that generates results almost immediately.
Researchers at Washington State University came up with the handheld breathalyser to detect THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

I tend to agree with this. Could be an important step.

yes.

But reality is the driving while high hasn't been a huge problem in CO. Most of the problems they have had with peopel driving while high, they were also drunk.

But this fixes the soccer mom complaint. 100% for this.

Good. People shouldn't drive under the influence of anything, including legally obtained marijuana.

I am "on the fence" regarding legalization; and this breakthrough would push me more towards supporting legalization.

Good. This is the reason most sensible Americans who are against the legalization of marijuana don't want it legalized. Now there's no excuses for it.

Will this be able to differentiate between being high while driving and simply having marijuana in your system?

I don't mind getting people off the road who are lost driving 10mph under the speed limit.

This is a problem

The idea is, that is the chemical was detected, a driver would be given a blood test, which could then be used as evidence in court.

So if you've smoked weed in the past ~30 days, you get to go in for a blood test. I don't see this as an infringement at all

And rape, it also causes rape. But I guess people don't care about rape victims as long as they get to smoke their doobies.

Yeah, like someone else said, the thread title is inaccurate. Darth, you may consider changing that for the stoners who won't read the article.
