EBR does all of these... except maybe the Ask-A-Lawyer Night. Not sure about that one.

BR has all of this and more. You should look into their digital downloads stuff that's available.

Seriously, check out the new Goodwood library. It constantly has stuff going on.

Like Goodwood? That place has been hot real estate with Town Center and the gentrification of Government Street.
The Carver Branch one is convenient for the poor folk who really need it, and it's not huge. It suits the neighborhood. Plus, Gentrification is heading that way with the Nicholson Corridor
The downtown one seems a little wasteful, but with all of the people moving downtown, it may not be that bad of an idea, it's just too ambitious in scope.

You know good and well that the library system is being used exponentially less and less over the years for book reading, literature etc. Amazon and e-readers have revolutionized the way we consume books and other media/literature/periodicals. It's not up for discussion.
You know the Goodwood Library serves a lot more functions than just checking out books. It's not up for discussion.
So many people have the mindset of "I don't use this or that, so frick it. I'm not in favor of a tax to help it."
You know there are people out there that don't have the money to get e-books, but I'm sure you do, so frick those people.

BREC needs to be privatized and charge admission to its parks. I never go to any of them and don't want to pay a dime for it.

With a library card, you can check out e-books for free.
Yeah, you still have to have an e-reader.

Why in the hell would I care about whether someone else can afford books? Why should I be forced to pay for it? Communism creeps in more all the time and you jerks applaud it.

They do this without anywhere near the same level of funding, and they've built massive new branches in Live Oak, between Walker & Denham, and elsewhere over the last decade.
But they're more of a way to reach out to and connect the community than libraries these days. With the digital revolution, they've done a far better job than the BR Library System of adjusting to their new role in the community.
Meanwhile, BR Library System is trying to build massive wastes of money in dying areas demographically and create downtown branches that don't and wouldn't serve the public the way branches in North Baton Rouge and South Baton Rouge-where the population's shifted-would.
I see.
Libraries for Meth heads = Good.
Libraries for crack heads = No Good/
ETA: as for OP, couldn't think of a better way to spend the money they need.

I wonder how many of the BRAF insiders have homes on the lakes?

Original link to article OP probably is talking about:

They would be in a better position to get a temporary tax passed for the lakes, as more people feel that they are a necessary expense in our city (see most of the posts above). However, with the public/private partnerships they are looking to foster, there would probably be no need for tax.
I would imagine Claitor pissed off a bunch of his constituents when he tried to remove all 40 million from the capitol outlay bill. (Hence why he now has someone running against him for State Senate)

Man you should really try to start your own city... oh, wait.
Sorry for your loss.

But I bet you'd happily sell your house thanks to the appreciated value brought on by living in a city with a high quality of life.
I'm a home owner in Ascension. We do not have a park system like BREC but I would gladly support it.
My kids will graduate from school in 5 years. Once they graduate, I guess I should vote down every school funding request/extension due to the fact I no longer need quality schools for my kids.

Speaking of that...there is a section of Goodwood that has employment search and placement. People bitch about worthless welfare leaches? Well there were 6 people in there on the computers utilizing the service in the two hours that I was there. In my visits to that library with my son, it's a very busy library.

They had a ballot measure about a year ago to create such a thing. It was a bond issue with some tax increases to pay for recreation which included upgrading a bunch of the existing small community parks plus adding a big rec complex at Lamar-Dixon. It went down mightily. The idea was that having such a complex at Lamar would allow Ascension to host travel ball tournaments and other events, but the people voted it down because they didn't want to have to pay more taxes to pay for Lamar-Dixon. They just wanted more improvements at their community parks or wanted no more taxes all together, regardless of where they were going.
The people also voted down an effort to raise taxes to build a parish wide water system rather than having Sorrento and Gonzales with water systems, Prarieville with a hodgepodge of private water systems for each subdivision, and rural areas relying on wells. It looks like the Prarieville portion may still happen by tying all of those systems together into a single, cohesive unit.

The lakes are one of the truly good things about BR. If we skimp on this we deserve to be a shitty town. People come from all over the city to enjoy the lakes and it's like the front yard to our flagship university in the Capital city. I'll gladly pay a tax and participate in fundraising activities to see this through.
I agree, the Lakes are a big deal, they represent EBR, and should be maintained and improved.
BREC is in charge of City Park and the Lake. BREC has a big revenue stream, and a large reserve. I'd like to see them use some of that reserve, and go after state and federal funds and do this project. I don't see the need for another tax.
I'd put the Lake project very high in the pecking order of things. Ahead of bike trails, the zoo, etc.
The library system seems to be doing well too, but I think after this round of construction they need to stop. They need to look at keeping what they have in good shape.

Gonzales Soccer Club is building a massive new complex in the open area next to LD. I've heard of plans to build a major signature park on the grounds as well. Hope it comes to fruition.
