EBRougeans are you for another tax? Do you think BREC taxes us enough already to improve the lakes on their own after all they just raised their property tax?

Are the leaders in the parish coming at us with too many things at once? Lake restoration, new zoo, trolley line, and new jail/mental health facility, etc.????

Do we need to prioritize and find out what is needed the most? Lakes, bike trails, zoo, light rail, more libraries, etc.???

It seems like once a month we get hit by another proposed idea from one group or another. Is it just me or do others here feel like the leadership in EBR wants to do too much all at once?

Gotta pay up to have nice things.

I don't think you see it this way, but these ideas and the opportunity to have them are a blessing. You could always move up to MS where it's a stretch just to keep the roads paved.

Kip tried to pay the money-men and powers that be which control BRAF with three separate tax proposals that added up to close to a billion bucks. He held red-light synchronization and jails hostage trying to get a 9 figure tax passed in EBR to grease their agenda's wheels.

Now they're just piece-mealing it a bit at a time. BREC Tax, Library System Tax, and now Lakes Tax. They realized BR won't pass a tax with that big number attached.

The lakes are one of the truly good things about BR. If we skimp on this we deserve to be a shitty town. People come from all over the city to enjoy the lakes and it's like the front yard to our flagship university in the Capital city. I'll gladly pay a tax and participate in fundraising activities to see this through.

If we are gonna prioritize, I'd put the lakes #1 clearly.

edit: also BREC is doing a fine job and the library system is very nice. I went to goodwood saturday and it was full of people.

I'd be willing to have a tax for that. We are in the process of trying to build our city. The projects in question are good projects and need funding.

They're playing catch up from years of neglect. At this pace, BR is only 20yrs out from being a decent place to live...as compared to other cities in the SE. In my opinion of course.

It's all overdue, 20 years overdue. It's nice to see BRAF and the downtown development district really doing work and coming up with some ideas. This town was such a shite show from the late 80's to late 2000's.

It depends on the level of the tax as to whether or not I would support it. I have seen the plans for the lakes and I love them. They are ambitious, probably overly so, but for the most part, they're exactly what I want and what this town needs.

I'm not opposed to taxes if I get some great service in return. After looking at the lakes project, I'm sold on the product, so it just depends on the price tag.

I want to see BREC connect bike trails. The concept I saw had bike trails from Santa Maria to downtown and all points in between (Seigan Village, Mall of Louisiana, BR General, OLOL, Town Center, LSU Lakes, Webb Park, ect).

I love that we have one of the best public library systems in the nation if not the world.

When I see my tax dollars yielding great results, I don't mind paying them. Now, that money pit that is the EBR public school board, screw them. They're not getting another dime. CATS? Until they shakeup leadership, they're not getting another dime, and not getting an increase unless passenger rail is part of the deal.

Amen. I think the past BS with CATS and the school system have jaded taxpayers in BR. BREC and the library have performed with their funding quite nicely. I have no doubt that the lakes will be a gem in the city...a new zoo location would be nice, and although it's not the highest priority for me, I have no doubt that they'd do it right.

This is the BREC tax bill for a random house in Woodgate.

I prolly havent used a BREC, facility in 20 years.

frick BREC, they cant maintain what they have.

BREC MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS3 3.84M $149.38
BREC MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS4 0.41M $15.95
BREC MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS5 0.61M $23.73
BREC MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS1 2.04M $79.36

$270 year

Oh, and CATS was like $320 year.

You can thank Mark Drennen for most of the "rebirth" of Downtown and the emphasis on beautification. As Commissioner of Administration he bought up a lot of property downtown, centralized state government and put THOUSANDS of jobs and people in that area during working hours*. Completely breathed new life into the area and public/private partnerships and the private sector followed Drennen's lead and marched back downtown.

LSU has enjoyed the benefits of connecting downtown to the Ole War Skule and the Lakes as well.

*Didn't create them. Just relocated them to the LaSalle, Bienville, and Poydras Buildings.

Can you imagine what a great centerpiece the city would have right there with the Children's Museum, lakes project, and a new zoo? The biggest issue would be finding room for a parking garage, because that is going to be one popular attraction.

It's funny brec promised our area a splash park when they took our pool
out.
Now they don't have the funding!

They promised to fix up North Sherwood Community park. They only did enough to look good enough to ask for more taxes.
This park only got a small portion of what it was promised.

Brec needs the finish the projects they promised areas before starting new projects.

There are a lot people who will vote against any Brec tax until they finished what the promised.

I disagree. They do less with more and are doing it in order to serve a public that has less and less use for what they provide. Libraries need to be centers for public outreach and community enrichment.

Livingston Parish Public Libraries have 3D Printers, classes on them, Ask-A-Lawyer Nights where the BR Bar Association comes in, Microsoft Office Classes/Courses, summer reading and enrichment programs and they advertise the heck out of them in the local community.

They do this without anywhere near the same level of funding, and they've built massive new branches in Live Oak, between Walker & Denham, and elsewhere over the last decade.

But they're more of a way to reach out to and connect the community than libraries these days. With the digital revolution, they've done a far better job than the BR Library System of adjusting to their new role in the community.

Meanwhile, BR Library System is trying to build massive wastes of money in dying areas demographically and create downtown branches that don't and wouldn't serve the public the way branches in North Baton Rouge and South Baton Rouge-where the population's shifted-would.

Tons of people. Have you ever been by the Goodwood library on a Saturday? The place is busy as a beehive.

We also have bridges all over this parish that are closed or in poor shape.

Fixing bridges throughout this parish at this time is way more important than over spending on man made lakes.

You know good and well that the library system is being used exponentially less and less over the years for book reading, literature etc. Amazon and e-readers have revolutionized the way we consume books and other media/literature/periodicals. It's not up for discussion.

Their answer is somehow to ask for and get more money that they're simply building bigger buildings with.

They should put that money into community outreach and enrichment programs and classes. Not into high-priced baubles disguised as buildings.
