Not really relevant. There are successful people from all colleges. I'm sure Birmingham Southern had a lot of successful graduates.

That's the sad thing, bsc was a great school with much tougher entry requirements than ua or au back in the 90s. They had a string of bad leadership in the mid 2000s to 2017ish. They borrowed a ton of money on stupid projects like a big park with a man made lake, instituted football and built a stadium and built a bunch of new dorms. They thought it would attract enrollment but we see how it ended.

I graduated and played baseball at BSC from 1990-1992. Sad to see such a great university close its doors. I think the downfall began when they decided to move away from NAIA. That caused an unnecessary expenses for the university as it had to include certain athletics within it’s program.

Shreveport seems big enough to have a 4 year college

I agree, but LSUS satisfies that better than centenary these days.

Like ULM should just be a pharmacy and nursing school.

How the hell would a place survive being just a pharmacy and nursing school?

Also, I got my masters from ULM and it was a much more quality program than I thought I was signing up for

BSC had a division 1 program until 2007

Also:
quote:

Officials initially asked for $30 million in funding from the state legislature, $5 million from the city and considered a $2.5 million request from the county government.

They wanted over 37 million? School has less than 1,000 students. As a measure compared to student population Roughly over 37k per student? get the hell out of here.
Would have been better off going to Alabama State University or Alabama A&M

Think I’ll update my resume to say I received degrees from BSC … potential employers won’t be able to confirm it.

If you get the government out of the student loan business the costs will fall because the vast majority of students and their families won't be able to afford the current level of tuition. Student loans will still be available. But they will only be given to "well qualified buyers" who are at a lesser risk of default. The bank is less likely to give a $150k loan to a 2.0 student who intends to major in sociology.

Or, what happens is the supply of colleges drops dramatically, thus holding tuition prices steady. But since only the rich can now afford tution without loans, the entire middle class (except for a few kids who might get a full scholarship) will no longer be going to college.

I think then you will see an explosion of cheaper two year programs. The college experiece will change for all but the wealthy. Everyone else will get basically two more years of high school.

A good friend got her undergrad there, she's upset.

But I don't see how these ultra-small, ultra-private schools can make it today.

Also, the state should not be making loans to these schools for operating costs... how in the world are the schools going to be able to pay them back? I just don't see any workable turnaround strategy that could work here.

The more well known, larger privates will figure it out. But these 500 - 2000 student schools... I just don't see it. Maybe some of them merge.

There was poor financial management which only served to hasten the inevitable. Liberal arts degrees just aren't worth much these days. People can pour coffee at Starbucks without paying 6 figures for a worthless degree.

Samford is a bible beating Baptist school. Birmingham Southern produced normal people.

Samford is a bible beating school. Alot of its students are no dancing drinking Baptists(not all), and you can get in trouble with the school for simple things like alcohol

Birmingham Southern students eat shrooms for breakfast and acid for dinner

I may be wrong, but I thought there was a fairly recent post here about Mississippi considering closing some of their public colleges and Delta State was on the list.

Agreed, these two offer great academics and a different experience. Mishaps, Bellhaven, etc will struggle to keep the lights on.
