Just had a recruit contact me an hour ago citing this. School tuition was upwards of $22k/semester. Too expensive and their accredidation was very funky as many didn't have transferable hours to other schools. Their kids got screwed to find this out this late in the process and over Spring Break.

Samford also has the best CRNA program in the state. Their Graduate degree programs will keep them alive.

I’d imagine Spring Hill College in Mobile won’t be far behind.

As for alumni of Birmingham-Southern, must be weird to have a degree from a college that no longer exist

Sewanee supposedly is a rich kid college with lots of drugs. Been there… absolutely nothing out there. At least BSC you had a city to explore.

Plus I believe their endowment is huge.

I haven't seen anything about Jesuit schools being in dire straits. I'd be pretty surprised if they're having similar issues to other schools.

Millsaps needs 1200 students paying 50% tariff to survive. Right now they have something like 700 paying 35%.

Someone told me the fall of 2020 they had like 210 freshmen enrolled but only like 150 came back after Christmas.

They will be bought by UMMC and turned into a nursing/PT/OT school. Which would be a win win for everyone.

But a 1/2 mile away, Belhaven seems to be doing well, right? Maybe Belhaven or MC can take over that campus, it seems they've put a lot of money into over the past decade or so.

Could easily reign in costs by axing DEI and worthless degree programs

Wrong. The federal gov't is the backstop for all those student loans that are given away like candy to anyone who can fog a mirror. Who wouldn't want an ever increasing customer base with unlimited spending power? Of course the prices go up!

Dropping from NCAA D1 status didn’t help them.

It shouldn’t be $43k out of state to send your kid to Alabama in an era where you can attend virtual lectures from Oxford or Harvard for free.

Agreed.

Also, colleges are mismanaged. BSC was struggling with money, and I know multiple full time instructors there who had 3-4 students per class.

Imagine having a college professor gig with zero expectations to publish making $50k+ (probably much more) to teach about 15-20 students. Insanity.

Southern Shreveport
Southern Nola
Northwestern State
Nichols State
McNeese State
LSU-Shreveport (excluding medical school)
ULM (Move pharmacy school to LTU)
LSU-Alexandria

All need closed down or converted into trade school/2 year juco’s that feed a four year college.

Samford seems to be doing great

Samford really has the “Christian” university angle down pat. It’s not weird like Liberty and people develop a strong identity there through their education and their religion. I don’t see Samford having issues any time soon.

I feel like they almost lost or temporarily lost accreditation not too long ago. Shreveport really doesn't have any need for 2 colleges, especially with NSU and Tech both about an hour away.

This trend will accelerate. Millsaps, Rhodes, Suwannee, and countless others will begin the steady grind into oblivion.

Sewanee has an endowment of $425mil and Rhodes has an endowment of $400mil. They will both be ok for a long while. What these schools are going to need to do is stop giving out full rides to a bunch of kids and go back to a more pay as you go model.

I wonder what that campus land and buildings is worth at BSC?

Shreveport seems big enough to have a 4 year college. A lot of schools in the state need to shut down though. Same with MS. All those HBCUs need to be closed, but that ain’t happening.

Samford also has the fun benefit of, when you are out and about and people casually ask you where you went to school, and you sort of quickly mumble it in response, you often get a lot more really impressed looks from people than you would with a lot of other sort of random southern private liberal arts colleges.

Sewanne is beautiful and is an amazing collegiate experience. They have plenty of money to survive for a while.

Colleges like Sewanne need to cut out DEI and start really charging for tuition….and build up reserves / foundation.

How Centenary is still open is a mystery to me. That college would barely be a 3A high school.
