A high school classmate of mine's husband (no pics of either) was just named president of Delta State. Wonder if he could have stepped on a land mine there.

I would keep Northwestern, Mcneese, Nichols, LSU Shreveport, and ULM. Those all have big commuter catchment areas. And there is no other good option in the area. The others could go away and people could still drive somewhere to school.

Louisiana Tech would absorb all of these. The rest can be divided between Lafayette and LSU

your plan would have kids from Winsboro driving to Ruston every day which seems tough.

There’s nothing that says every citizen of the state must be within an hour of a 4-year college.

But even so, there is already Delta Community College in Monroe. So they would have to drive an extra 30 minutes their junior/senior year, or egads! move there.

I really don’t see a scenario where all these schools close, so perhaps they just downsize and specialize.

Every school shouldn’t be all things to all people anyway.

Make ULM be a health careers university. They already have pharmacy, nursing and the affiliated DO med school. They could expand on that.

Keep Tech as the engineering school, but peel of some unrelated majors.

Do similar things at other schools. Perhaps convert some to community colleges.

The idea that within barely 100 miles of I20 there are four 4-year public universities is ridiculous. Five when you include private universities with Centenary, plus at least three junior colleges.

Pretty sad

Some of the smaller schools have even decided to cut their tuition. That’s a death spiral imo.

I don't think BSC was the type of school to be absorbing too much frat boy money.

There seems to be too many of these schools but I can also see some of them being a good niche for some students so hopefully some remain viable.

I graduated and played baseball at BSC from 1990-1992. Sad to see such a great university close its doors. I think the downfall began when they decided to move away from NAIA. That caused an unnecessary expense for the university as it had to include certain athletics within it’s program.

Samford's bball coach played at Samford. His assistant coach at Samford was his head coach at BSC.

And, of course, the Brady Steamroller first cranked up at Samford!

Doubtful. That is a public university, so barring societal collapse it won't close.

Not so fast.
The difference is lower costs and a massive endowment.

BSC endowment: valued at nearly $54M
Centenary: valued at nearly $149M

A muscial masterpiece written by an Alumnus.

Pure lyrical poetry that was intentionally overlooked by the CMAs.

Samford also has the best CRNA program in the state. Their Graduate degree programs will keep them alive.

Samford is going to be just fine. Not even comparable to the mismanagement at BSc the last 20 years.

I wonder what that campus land and buildings is worth at BSC?

Not shite, that was their biggest problem. No one wants a shitload of acreage surrounded by the worst ghetto in birmingham.

It's definitely on the chopping block.

The MS legislature wants to close MS Valley State. And in fairness they have to close a historically white school as balance. So that would certainly be MUW. And then Valley State would get absorbed into Delta State.

But it is not out of the realm of possibility that Delta State gets caught up in the maelstrom. They are dead serious about closing 2 or 3 public universities in Mississippi

Never understand the draw for pharmacy school.

Get a graduate degree to ultimately work retail and make mediocre money.

What part am I missing?

Kate Jackson of Charlie's Angel's fame went there. She was a Mountain Brook debutante and a classy TV hottie.

$149 million isn't gonna be enough. Millsaps has about that and they are talking about turning it into a Foundation that offers scholarships and programs like study abroad, field archaeology, etc. Millsaps will cease to exist as a 4 year institution. It will need a much bigger endowment than that to survive
