I think it's more Deep South and Upper South. As I think about it, it's kind of unfair to not consider Florida part of the Deep South.

It's really a cultural thing, and one that is not necessarily the type to boast about.

That's the DC influence I suppose. If you get far enough away from the suburbs there are pockets of southern culture.

I'd throw the lower half of Tennessee in with the Deep South.

Nashville has southern qualities, but seems to be a "fake" South. If that makes sense. Seems contrived as part of their tourist draw.

Charleston used to be Southern. Everyone you meet here now is from Ohio or Pennsylvania. It's significantly hurting the city's charm and culture in my honest opinion. GobacktoOhio.com

ETA: It's gotten so bad, that the Minor League baseball team holds a "Go Back to Ohio" night.

Most southern Northern state is Vermont

I think it's a tie between them New Hampshire & Maine. Visited all 3 a couple years ago, the people were very "southern" like.

Wow, LSUbase13! I'm speechless. I had no clue Ohioans favored South Carolina like that. Quite funny since I'm moving to Wright-Patterson AFB in July.

My definition of the South goes like this,

There's the "Clean" South or Publix South: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, East Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina

and there's The "Dirty" or Backwards South: West Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana.

Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia are kinda odd "Iffy South". They're Southern but have influences from the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic areas.

But Redneck is everywhere even when I was stationed in New Jersey there were Rednecks near the Southern interior part of the state.

Larry Bird has a southern accent. A lot of people migrated from appalachia to Indiana and Ohio to work in the auto industry.

I thought Larry Byrd was from French Lick, Indiana. Southern Indiana is definitely redneck.

I still use Mason-Dixon line as the traditional reference and not all the cultural distinctions the OT loves to make.
