re: Best Southern State/City To Live In?

I would love to live in the surrounding Knoxville area again. I am not a city person though. No place in the southeast I would rather live.
I think you will appreciate that place a lot more once you live somewhere else. It's good to get out of your comfort zone.
I am from New Orleans, love that place and it's home, but doubt I will ever live there again. It would take an awful lot of money to ever get me to Atlanta. Nashville is just meh to me, but wouldn't mind it there. Chattanooga is only good for it's internet, but I have good friends here and it's not too bad of a drive to some of the areas I love in this part of the country. Charleston and Savannah would be an interesting experience, love visiting them. I prefer Charleston. Asheville seems to be the new hipster town everyone loves, it's overrated to me.
What's your major?

Natchez is great.
Small and sleepy, but a beautiful town.

Mountain Brook is pretty cool, but it's also expensive to live in. Not sure if it's suitable for a young professional who's probably going to be living in an apartment but it's a cool town.
Mountain Brook and to some extent, Vestavia, would be my only interests in Birmingham (and I do like Birmingham). They're far more attainable for most people than Park Cities in Dallas or the higher end areas of Atlanta, plus the public schools are doable.

The only correct answer is Shreveport/Bossier

... and we appreciate the volunteers prying us from Mexico.
As for Texas in the south, I've found this to be a good rule:
East of I-45 = South
West of I-45 = Southwest, or just "Texas."
The southwest really begins around Abilene/San Angelo.
This simple rule is generally true for culture, geography, weather, cuisine, accents, etc..

Your SEC school allegiance put aside, what Southern state would you most desire to live in and what part?
Does this mean I can't pick New Orleans? Because New Orleans is #1 for me and no one else is really close, but:
Nashville is great
Memphis is great if you're into that kinda stuff (blues, bbq, filth, etc.)
Charlotte is really clean and nice. Maybe too clean and nice for me.
Don't think I'd want to live anywhere in Georgia besides Savannah.
frick Florida (minus Pensacola), Alabama (minus Mobile/Baldwin Co.) and the majority of Arkansas (never been to Fayetteville, heard it's great)

I'm sorry but I could never live in Alabama. Terrible economy compared to similar areas in the South and I need to live in a place that actually has properly paved interstates. Everytime I drive through Alabama I feel like I'm on a cheap carnival ride.

If I could somehow retire at 28 and have enough money to live very comfortably, I'd already have my house on the market and be buying a house in Charleston. Florida Keys would probably be my next option. But with a career, I'm going to have to stick with east Texas (Houston, Dallas) and NOLA. Too much money to be made. Don't think I could make the money I do anywhere else. I don't know what I could do with an engineering degree in those other places, at least not making the money you can in the oil field.

You would fricking hate Louisiana.

Awful lot of money to be made in Nuclear plants for engineers that aren't PETEs and you can find those pretty close to a variety of areas in the southeast.

I was under the impression that anything north of Alec and west of Mississippi was Texas?

I don't blame you. That isn't really fair to Alabama, which has nice areas and certainly isn't as yokel as the reputation indicates, but I understand the feeling.

On Fish River, AL. I guess it's technically Magnolia Springs?

close to it if you are a good engineer, you will clean up with overtime thats for sure.
you obviously aren't going to compete with the oil/gas industry, but you can make good money outside of it and be in an area you want to live.

Whoa - how does St Helena and Washington parishes enter a discussion about good southern cities to live in ?

I shall start looking to apply. I'm serious, the only thing keeping me here is the money. I love the Louisiana coast, but that area is so nice and still coastal.

It's stressful as hell with all the regulation and paperwork, some people do better in it than others. I left it cause it wasn't for me. I made good money while I was there and met some people that got me out and in hydroelectric. Far less money in it, but I am happier.
My dad is in oil/gas, seems like they are getting heavy regulated now too though.
