I lived in memphis for 3 years. Anywhere in a 200 mile radius will forever be out of the question. Olive Branch is a hole and the weather is terrible. The spring is downright scary.

Memphis has come a long way since I lived there but I would still never consider living there again

I would love to live in the surrounding Knoxville area again. I am not a city person though. No place in the southeast I would rather live.

Which part were you in?

Big cities? Tampa (by a mile); then Louisville, Nashville, Charlotte, maybe parts of metro Birmingham and Greater New Orleans.

Mid-size/compact cities? Ashville, Athens, Savannah, Charleston, Huntsville, Brentwood, Lexington.

Small cities/towns? Bradenton/Sarasota (FL), Elizabethtown (KY), St. Augustine.

Memphis is great if you're into that kinda stuff (blues, bbq, filth, etc.)

Memphis is a cesspool. Aside from amazing barbeque it literally has nothing else going for it. Avoid at all costs. I will never live there again. Even BBQ gets old after a while.

Ok, you are graduating in accounting and say you have a lot of options. So...

1. You need to start your career in a medium to large city with a Big 4 firm or large national firm like mcgladrey, grant, or cbiz. This is by far you first consideration and not up for discussion.

2. Your top 3 southern cities for accounting careers are Houston, Atlanta, and the Dallas fort worth metro plex. Dallas is urban and kinda thinks it is a mini LA, fort worth is just a cool clean place with a lot of uniqueness. Houston is a massive concrete jungle ofhigh rises and interstates, but has the best job market in the US. Atlanta is inbetween Dallas and Houston but still somewhat southern and not Texan. There is a difference. I have lived in all 3 and Atlanta is my pick followed by Dallas, fort worth, then Houston.

3. If none of #2 appeals to you, charlotte and Miami or fort Lauderdale do not have as many business opportunities, but theystill are solid viable choices where you can work on large clients with the Big 4, just more middle market instead of fortune 500 companies. And the size of the client really doesn't matter. You just need a large public firm in a decent size city on your resume. See #1.

Ftr, having lived in a lot of places in the southeast, south florida is #1 for me. I could get a job in any decent size city in the country due to a strong resume and south florida is my choice.

Texas

Houston or Dallas. Both economies are in full boom. You will not find a better standard of living vs cost of living in the world

This is very true, anyone can make good money in these cities, BUT they are big as frick and have horrible traffic. I enjoy living in a mid size city where I can get around but still have plenty to do.

I'd look at Nashville, Nola, Bham, Charleston & the Mobile area. (Mobile area = Eastern shore of Mobile Bay.)

Mobile and Nola should be nonstarters for someone with options starting an accounting career. I'm not even sure any of the big 4 are even in mobile.

And there is absolutely nothing on the eastern shore. He won't even be able to find a job there. Mom and pop shops with locals is about it for accountants there.

I have not lived in Memphis as in owned or rented a home and worked there. I have spent quite a bit of time there over the past few years.

I don't like Beale Street Memphis. I do like Midtown/Cooper Young, record shopping (Goner is my favorite store in America), the numerous music venues (Hi-Tone/Buccaneer/Murphy's/Young Ave Deli, etc.), the dive bars, the Stax Museum, Wild Bill's on a weekend night (although I haven't been in years), the history, and the overall feel. There are parts of town that I still haven't checked out, such as the revitalized Broad Avenue strip. For my interests, Memphis offers more than most cities. I realize that there are issues with crime, although the entire Midtown area always seems relatively safe (as opposed to here in NOLA where the shady areas are scattered among the nicer areas). Housing is cheap as shite, too.

There is a reason for that.

I can agree with you here.

What would I find that I hated about Memphis after living there that was unknown to me through many visits?

I don't mean for this to be confrontational, I'm genuinely curious.

I really loved Raleigh when I visited. People were charming and the city is really clean. Driving distance to mountains, beach, still a lot of southern culture, decent nightlife, and plenty of career opportunities (it's like the ATX of the Mid-Atlantic).

I recently moved to the North Atlanta region (Buckhead/Perimeter area) and really like it. Very diverse and a great quality of life. Chattahoochee Preserve is nice. Breath of fresh air since I lived in South Louisiana my whole life.

Don't really get why New Orleans or Lafayette gets so many props. I grew up in Lafayette and moved back after graduating from LSU, recently left, and I'm never looking back. Small city mindset with big city problems IMO.

No I gotcha.

Well I know NOLA, and I know BR. Both have patchy areas that are easy to avoid. Memphis is the same, but more unknown, and I would say probably more violent too. I went to a school up there that was in a decent area and there were constantly problems with robberies right outside the gates. There was even an attempted kidnapping. I was only there for a year and a half before saying F this. I also had two coworkers get robbed at gunpoint... outside of a church. Additionally, aside from music and BBQ there just really isn't anything going for Memphis (well there's St. Jude, but hopefully you never have a reason to go there). If you want to stay out of the shitty parts you have to move out to Germantown. In Memphis central the people suck. Are you white? It will suck even more. The black people there really don't like white people and have no qualms about showing it.
