It's for a 10 year old for street riding, ramps, curbs, steps and things most kids do. I grew up with Diamondback, Mongoose and Redline. The former two have gone to pot and Redline seems pricey for a beginner. What are the equivalents now that can take a beating from a kid? Thanks.

i had a mongoose about 12 years ago.

Make sure there's pegs. No chick wants to get with the kid who can't ride her around the hood.

This takes me back holy shite. I had Mongoose handle bars, and 2 other brands for the crank and body that were high end.

We used to spend rainy days in the garage just throwing bikes together to test out.

Even had a buddies back yard with massive dirt ramps all over. Good times.

ETA: Hoffman! That was it. They were top end back in the day, still make them too it appears. GT crank with a Hoffman frame and Mongoose handle bars. I was pimp shite.

I forgot about gyros. For all those times I was making sweet jumps and spinning my handle bars. Wanted that and pegs soooo badly and never used that crap . Pegs were just a way for a friend to catch a ride and my chicken shite kid self was not attempting anything fancy like spinning my handlebars

My son's been on a BMX since he was 3, Haro Z12, and has had a bunch of different ones. For his 9th I finally let him pick out a bike. He didn't want a BMX anymore, said it was too slow. He wants to be able to cruise with the neighborhood kids, and they're too scared to hit the ramps anyway. He still wanted it undersized a bit...we tried to get him on something bigger. I guess he was so accustomed to the BMX size.

It's an 18 or 21 speed Trek with grip shifters and was $300-something.

If he's not going to be competing on Helltrack for a national championship against Cru Jones or Bart Conner, just go up to Academy, sports authority, or a place like that and pick him out a bike that he likes.

You are overthinking this bigtime.

Yea well I told him he could pick out any bike in the shop and that's the one he wanted. We tried to talk him into other ones, but all of the Treks had that SLR frame geometry.

ETA: it's a boys bike MT 220
