My son is needing back surgery after trying conservative procedures first. The pain is in his butt and radiates down his leg.

Who are the best ortho or neuro surgeons in Lafayette?

One ortho said he could help with the leg/butt pain, but the back pain would probably persist to some extent. The back pain is less than 20% of overall discomfort.

I wouldn't do it then. Once they cut your back, it is a downward spiral.

Do yourself a favor and take him to see Dr. Kelly Scrantz in BR at the Neuromedical Center. Best neurosurgeon in the state.

There are stretches that help this a good bit. There are also minimally evasive surgeries that trim off the bulge and pack around it.

You can 'fix' nerve issues, you can't really fix the bone structure of a spine.

Dr Bertuccini is pretty good. Has he had steroid injections done?

Put it off as long as possible. If he's overweight at all, try dropping 10-15 pounds (or more, depending how overweight).

I'm currently dealing with the same exact thing.

I'm not getting surgery. Sometimes the side effects from surgery are worse than the pain pre-op. I'd get a few consultations, then make an informed decision.

Good luck to the little guy.

Googling 'Mackenzie maneuver' is a good way to find these.

I have known several people who have had back surgery. From everything I have heard from them and hearing them talk about others they talked to. Back surgery is a mixed bag and at best a gamble. Seems like a third get better, another third it does no good and the last third it actually makes it worse. Best advice is to not rush into it. Do as much research and seek out as much advice as possible.

Yea. My lower back is fubar. I've done everything possible except going under the knife. That will be the resort after my last resort.

How old is he? I would definitely go to a neuro doc before an ortho doc. Spine docs have the lowest quality of life with their patients. Once you start having back surgery it only gets worse, so I would put it off as long as possible.

Agree with AM. Dr. Scrantz is one of the best.

I have a herniated disk. and have similar pain. I have gone through all of the conservative treatments. There is a procedure called a radio frequency ablation that can help with the lower back pain. Basically they go in and burn the nerve that sends the pain generator to the brain. It's an outpatient procedure an no overnight stay in the hospital. It really helped me.

Wrong. I ruptured 2 discs and had back surgery over 10 years ago and my back is just fine. Running, weights, motocross, etc. No back problems whatsoever.

This, this, this, and this.

Kelly fixed my herniated disc last December. I'm now 100% and pain free. This was after "the best orthopedic surgeon" told me there was nothing he could do.

May God Bless you Kelly Scrantz for fixing my back!!!!!

My son is 29 years old, tall and slim. He had both decompression with a PT and the injections. Both only offered temporary relief.

He has a problem with severe pain when he stands for more than a couple of minutes. He takes pain medication or suffers.

I was going to say these 2 options but looks like he already has done both How long has he done the decompression and is it with a Chiro?

Might be a candidate for the knife.

Dr. Munshi did my back surgery in Lafayette. Was my second surgery, did a 2 level fusion with 8 screws and 2 rods. Could not walk hardly at all before the surgery. Now I'm back to fishing and playing golf. Biggest thing I can say is to keep your weight in check... stay where the Dr. recommends you keep your weight.
