OP...Do yourself a favor and get in contact with Dr Frank Cullichia @ Cullichia Neuro in Marrero. When my wife was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm we searched high and low for the best neurosurgeon in the Gulf South.I am so thankful we ended up there. He is one of the top neurosurgeons in the nation. He is also the head of Neurosurgery at the LSU Medical Center. You wont find better Neuro care in La. Cullichia Neuro

Dr Cullichia does not do any type of spine surgery, he is strictly a brain surgeon. He is great at what he does, and is the go to guy for clipping aneurysms in the state.

Trust me I know who does what in that clinic. But thanks for the clarification for those that do not know.

Eta: I was referring to the clinic as a whole being the one if the best in the nation. The op would want to see dr Steck. He's the back and neck neuro, and he's also considered one of the best in the nation at what he does. Or he should see dr Toomer who is te pain management dr over there.

There is no such thing as a "bulging disc."

Thanks Dr. Poop.

Anytime.

But it is true. Bones don't bulge.

You available for IMEs, bro?

Go see Dr. Henry Eiserloh, ortho in B.R. I have seen him have success with complicated cases. Baton Rouge has better orthos and neuros than Lafayette. I do not know that I would treat for a back in Lafayette when B.R. is so close.

My lower spine is curved and I have three bulging disk that pinch my nerve. Steroid injections helped a lot. Surgery would be an absolute last resort, but a lot of people have has good results with it.

Ruptured two and herniated two discs. It was recommended to me that I go under the knife. I chose not to because I am still young(happened when I was 24, 5 years ago), and didn't want to take the chance of it seriously screwing me up for the rest of my life. It ended up being the right decision because I don't really hurt at all now.

I can still irritate it if I walk a few miles with a heavy pack, but it isn't persistent. My advice is to just wait it out. Maybe try some PT. Surgery can be done at any time. Reverse surgery is a little harder to do

This. Dr. Steck performed both my surgeries. Do not delay. I waited too long and may have permanent numbness in my right leg. I am 100% pain free though. Don't mess around. See neurosurgeon ASAP.

Just wanted to add too that if you're in Lafayette try to get a referral to go to Precision Rehabilitation. I don't know where you tried before, but those guys will probably be some of the best PTs you can find there if y'all wanna give the conservative approach another shot.

IMO, if there's no true nerve degeneration, I'd give conservative treatment multiple failed attempts before considering surgery

Kelly scrantz is the best. My dad wore a back brace every day for 20+ years after a car accident and scrantz got him out of the back brace with minimal pain after surgery

Absolutely, AMEN, brother. Dr. Scrantz saved me from having back surgery with a regimen of exercise and Physical Therapy. If you need surgery, he will do it...but if you don't, he will not.

This is a follow up regarding my son's back issues. We did go to see Kelly Scrantz in Baton Rouge at the Neurosurgery Center.

Kelly reviewed the situation and thought he would benefit from microdiscectomy. (He had tried all conservative treatments first.)

He had surgery last week. When he was rolled into the room after recovery, he told me the pain he had been in for over a year was gone.

So far so good. He cannot drive for two weeks and cannot bend over or twist for six to eight weeks. But, he is standing taller and his disposition is much improved.

Thanks again to those of you that provided input to direct my decision.
