Then you're either out of touch with costs, or got duped into buying overpriced flowers.

We didn't buy ANY flowers.

At $50 a head (decent price for most NOLA area venues), photographer, band, cakes, etc., you can get to 25k pretty easily with a 250 person wedding.

I remember some of the hotels in NOLA were like $160 a head! Just for food and drinks. For 250 people, that's 40k without paying for anything else!

This is why I hate the idea of having a daughter. I mean I guess I always have the shot of her being a lesbian, but this damned country is fighting for them to get married too, so there's no out

Agreed. I would think on average most nice New Orleans venues charge between $60-$100 per person for food and open bar. That alone eats up almost all of a $25k budget when you have 200 people. Then there is all the other stuff that REALLY adds up.

Yes. Yes it is. Dear God. You are the one that's out of touch.

Then again, this was probably one of those huge gaudy NOLA weddings with a trashball money dance wasn't it?

In no way shape or form are you "wrong". It's your life and only you can do what you feel is best. This is especially true if you would be having to pay for your own wedding.

As for me, wife's family threw an awesome party that I will remember forever.

Well, who did, and what did they cost? You said they could be the most expensive thing, surely you have some sort of evidence to back that up...

I don't know much about NOLA weddings.

Hotels and their in-house catering are generally a rip off. You can plenty of nice venues that allow outside catering.

It's really not though. All it takes is one of the couple having a big family to get that number.

The Florida person is casting judgement about being trashy And no, no money dance at my wedding. I've actually only seen them in about 5% of the weddings I've attended over the years.

No one did. We didn't have flowers and didn't plan on having any. My wife noticed the ridiculous cost of them by going to wedding shows and what not.

Ok, I was just making sure your statement had no basis in facts.

Right. So unless you've actually paid for an item, you can't possibly know how much it costs.

I don't think 200 is big either. Most weddings I've attended have been between 200-300 people. It's a social event.

As it pertains to being the most expensive part of a wedding, absolutely you can't. I guarantee I can find a more expensive venue than any floral arrangement you show me. Don't be stupid.

No doubt about it. This is the major reason it's so expensive. If you could have outside catering, you could save a 3rd of the price. But we literally could not find a place in NOLA that would allow it.

And as far as 200 people being a lot. It wasn't hard for us to get to that number with mostly family. My mom and dad both came from families with 7 children. I have lot's of cousin's that I'm very close with (all my groomsmen). I had to tell my parents to keep it cool with their list. We easily could have gotten over 100 people without me even having to invite friends and coworkers. And that's just my side.

Personally, I think you are doing the right thing by taking the money. But you also should just do what you want. It's your day.

I wish more people would forgo the big, expensive wedding for accumulating some funds that could help pay for really big ticket, life-changing assets like homes and vehicles.

Oh, so now we're including the actual venue itself. Keep moving the goal posts.

Got married at the Board of Trade. It was expensive but it was awesome.

Who needs a money dance? There's a more discreet way of receiving tons of cash.
