Tim Cook is a true American. Risking his freedom and job over what he believes in, which is limited government. Praise be.

That's not the password you use to get into the phone.

So how do you login to icloud?

The lock screen password (what the FBI is trying to crack) is native to the phone. They keep trying passwords and hitting the time limit or erase limit.

As far as I am aware you can only login to iCloud online (provided it is even enabled on your phone) and find the phones location, make it play an alarm to help find it, lock it, or remote wipe it.

Whole lotta stupidity in this thread. We are talking about circumventing an encryption algorithm that's used on over 100 million phones. They actually are trying to enact the All Writs Act from 1789 and forcing Apple to give them essentially a master key to every iPhone that runs iOS. Sure, the FBI is saying they will only use it for this case. Of course they would. There is NO WAY to guarantee they will and would you really trust our government with a master key to all Apple iPhones?

I'm not a blind Apple sheep by any means but this is a way bigger issue than Apple or iPhones. This is a personal privacy and data security issue that would set a scary precedent.

Point taken. Seems the majority of the relevant info would come from carrier call records or messaging stored on icloud anyway.

What use is putting something on the phone unless it gets communicated to the outside world which leaves an electronic trail

why can't Apple just unlock this phone and hand it over to FBI? They wouldn't need to tell them how they did it.

Apple doesn't hold the encryption keys. They are stored locally and securely on the phone. They'd have to completely undermine their encryption process. Every nation-state out there would undoubtedly be hacking the shite out of Apple's network to get the specs on how to backdoor it even if they didn't tell the FBI directly.

Develop a backdoor and it's everyones backdoor.

Because it would contain a custom build of iOS that has a backdoor. Once that phone leaves Apples hands they have no control over that build.

Didn't the detectives who were investigating La'Ell Collins's girlfriend's death say that Apple said they couldn't even access her phone? What crazy tech.

I agree with Apple on this one.

That said, WTF? We don't have a tech guy in our government who can break into an Iphone? Call the Chicoms, I'm sure they have someone who can do it.

It's evident in this thread that people aren't understanding what Apple is being asked to do and the potential implications.

Here's a good comparison from Reddit.

quote:

I suggest everybody will have to install an additional door to their home with one master key, and this key will be given to the FBI. The key will also open any safe inside the house. Sometimes there's a need to search the house or even save people in it, and it's very difficult when the owner is not around. This way, the FBI will have access, to be used only in legitimate cases and truthfully, based on the good intentions of the agents. For our own good. Politicians and public figures are excluded. Unless they have something against the FBI, in which case this key will be used to get information that might shape their agenda and priorities. Again, for the public's benefit.

ETA: You are starting to sound like that one crazy relative everyone has on Facebook. At least attempt to understand the logic here.
