We're driving back through Mississippi after visiting family up north. I've heard Madison mentioned here a couple of times, but had never driven through.

We decided to detour and make a pass through town. I really don't think I've seen a town in Louisiana that even comes close to Madison in terms of cleanliness and 'bang for your buck'.

Aside from it being in Mississippi, are there any other negatives?

The nicer neighborhoods in the Jackson Metro Area of MS are nicer than any I've seen in the Baton Rouge Metro Area and it's not even close.

As someone who grew up in Mississippi, did you need any more?

They have the ordinance that any building built along the "strip" in Madison must be brick and have plans approved through council. This makes the town look really nice.

The horrendous crime in Jackson, 5 miles away? Haven't we seen posts on here about Jackson crime spilling over into Madison?

That or Oxford are the only 2 places in Mississippi I'd remotely consider living in.

Negatives I've heard about:

-very cliquish unless you went to Ole Miss and know people or grew up there and know people
-I've heard there are better public schools in Mississippi. I'm sure there are better in Louisiana. a lot of the richest people send their kids to private schools. (I guess you could say this about anywhere, but I think the schools should be better than they are just looking at ratings)
-not sure if this is only the case in some of the neighborhoods, but I know in some, you can't have yard sales, yard signs, cars with lettering, etc. now this may not be a negative for some people (honestly, I wouldn't mind it)
-cops are bad. most of the people who live there are tired of thugs from wherever they moved from so they don't mind it much.

it seems like a cool place to live. I love to boat. great hunting and fishing in Mississippi. much more culture than Texas. if there is ever an MLB baseball team within a couple of hours, I honest to God might move there.

Point me to some photographic evidence of this.

I'm not disputing you, I'm just ignorant and curious.

The cliques are more divided by where you went to high school more than anything else. It's weird. You'd think adults would grow out of that.

Best public schools around here are in Rankin County I believe, not Madison County.

And I do believe on average Louisiana kids scores higher.
