He's looking up Madison and any other town mentioned on Google and acting as if he knows everything about them after searching a couple public school scores for 2 minutes.

Madison Central probably comes the closes to BRHS in terms of curriculum out of all public high schools in Mississippi.

Madison is the way it is because of one woman's vision and the backbone to stick to it. No apartments are allowed either and landlords have to shape up or ship out.

Everything you have said seems like it came from the first couple links you clicked on after you googled a city

Mama Hamil's is awesome. My favorites there are the ribs, fried gizzards, mac and cheese, and fried cornbread.

I lived in BR 10 years then moved to Madison when my kids were little. I've never regretted moving here and I loved living in BR. The people, food and activities were great in BR but had no choice but private school and my commute was 45 min to 1 hour. . Madison is a great place to raise a family and there are a lot of good opportunities for entrepreneurs. Property values are very good due to tough zoning. Someone mentioned it already but no aparments at all allowed in Madison and it keeps the section 8 crap out. between the reservoir and Lake Caroline, there are great boating, meoghborhoods and gold courses. Schools are good, but we did opt for private school but would probably recommend public. Starting to have some good food but will never compare to BR. Lots of good neighborhoods and prices range from $200k starter homes to $1MM+ for gated communities or places on the water.

If you eat lunch there, going back to work is pure torture.

I live in Oxford, but grew up in the Jackson area. Madison is nice. Oxford schools are probably the best schools in the state (or so my wife says they're rated as such), but Madison's are very nice. It's a pretty good ways from Jackson, but if you get out into the county (Canton,Gluckstadt, etc) in Madison it gets dark pretty quickly.

As for it location relative to Jackson, it's not much different than living in the subs around NOLA. Jackson and NOLA both frickin suck, with NOLA probably being worse. Both cities have decent subs surrounding it though with Madison being a really good one.

So dangerous AF?

Its a tough decision, but I'll give it to NOLA because you have a greater chance of getting murdered in broad daylight.

Maybe, but you still have to deal with all the shite that comes with being a suburb of the two cities.

very cliquish unless you went to Ole Miss and know people or grew up there and know people

Not really the case. Madison has a lot of transient corporate professionals. So it is no more cliquish than another town of its size.

I've heard there are better public schools in Mississippi. I'm sure there are better in Louisiana. a lot of the richest people send their kids to private schools.

Not to be the case. When we got married I looked at all the schools. Madison Central, Jackson Prep, JA and MRA were all about equal. St. Andrews was the only outlier but I wouldn't spend more on HS than college for our kids and from what I have seen those kids though highly educated don't seem to be able to assimilate very well (i.e. very liberal and geeky)

quote:

not sure if this is only the case in some of the neighborhoods, but I know in some, you can't have yard sales, yard signs, cars with lettering, etc. now this may not be a negative for some people (honestly, I wouldn't mind it)

This is true in many of the upscale neighborhoods. Also the commercial zoning is nice because it keeps the riff-raft out (i.e. There are no real bars and clubs either). Yes the Cops tend to be gestopish but if they need that way to keep the trash South of County Line Red then so be it.

Best public schools around here are in Rankin County I believe, not Madison County. And I do believe on average Louisiana kids scores higher.

As a county yes Rankin County scores higher. However if you subtract Velma Jackson Madison proper would surpass Rankin and be right up there with Louisiana school districts. I hate the football game every year when they award the National Honor Society. Think last year there were well over 50 kids announced.

The coast schools routinely rate higher than Madison

Yes when you compare school district to school district. Madison has Velma Jackson as a rather heavy anchor and Ridgeland isn't exactly great. If you take them out of the equation it wouldn't even be close. Throw in the sports and extra-circulator activities....only Oxford and Tupelo compare.

It is if home style buffets with huge selections are your thing. I personally like 2 Sisters better for a "put the feed bag on" meal. However, me what you are looking for and I will guide you.

it's not the school district it's the low-income students. for some reason they perform really bad compared to other schools.

when you factor that out Madison Central looks just as good as any in the state.

No, no, no! Absolutely beautiful restaurant but food quality is not up to snuff.

Yes, but Eily's is good as well.

Don't forget Lou's, Caet, Manship, Saltines (better than R'evolution), Local 463 and County Seat.

Take it from someone who grew up in the Hancock public school system, they are not. Like any other public school, the AP program is the ony thing worth a damn.
