That'll happen. Sometimes, you go a bit too deep into the Internet.

No. If I did I'd just laugh at them until they called me an insensitive a-hole and never spoke to me again.

As well it should be. Transgender isn't an innocent fad or a matter of choice. It is the expression of mental illness.

Actually it's more like reinforcing a somatic delusion and is more likely malpractice if we're being honest with ourselves.

I honestly don't know much of his/her history of relationships since she is my wife's cousin. She did write a really long letter explaining the change and sent it to family and friends. I read most of it and respect it, but I still don't "get" it.

This cousin lives in another state and we rarely see her, so in some ways its easier to accept from a far.

If it's something that makes the person happy then I don't see why so many people have a problem with it. I mean it's pretty weird, but whateve, it's not my body or life.

It doesn't make them happy and many want to revert back to their original sex. These are people who have been mentally ill their entire lives and often have a history of chaotic, neglectful or traumatic upbringings. All the foolishness about "I've always known I was really a woman" is hindsight and rationalization for when they become convinced that a transition is what they need.

You mean Michael Jackson wasn't a white boy trapped in a black man's body?

This. We are reinforcing a mental illness under the guise of "gender equality." Its absurd.

He was just fine until he went to college.

He had a very normal, safe, and healthy upbringing from a somewhat prominent family in small town MS.

I feel as if his therapist is taking him to the cleaners with the hormones and anti-depressants. I somewhat agree with what I quoted, actually.

Maybe you're right, but I wouldn't know. At least as far as making them happy or not. It's their decision and responsibility to find that out for themselves anyway. I'm fine staying out of it.

Mental illness typically sets in around 17-30 years old for men. I'd be surprised if there wasn't something that happened in his childhood, neglect, abuse, something.

I'm more concerned that some of these folks are mistakenly lead to believe that a transition is whats going to fix their issues by people who have some sort of gain in the situation.

I'd be surprised if there was, more surprised than I was when he told us he was transitioning. His family isn't like that.

You never really know what goes on in families, especially if it's emotional neglect. I had an uncle who was molested by a neighbor unbeknownst to his parents.

But each person is different and there are instances that seem to have no catalyst.

Your friend is mentally ill. Chopping your dick off and taking hormones to grow tits to feel better about yourself is in the "crazy as all get out" category.
If you are such a good friend, you should be trying to counsel him and help him realize this is a terrible idea. There is a void he is trying to fill and he thinks this is the answer. It is in no way the answer.

Now if he does go through with the transition, are you going to be gay when it inevitably gives you a BJ late one night after bro-sissing it up at a bar? Remember, You'll be drunk, it'll have tits. You'll be faced with a real dilemma and I want you to be prepared to either a) be gay or b) turn down a BJ from a girl
