Hides his gayness? I don't even know what that means, but I would hate for a friend to feel like he would have to "hide his gayness" from me.

A sex change/transition for a transgendered person is considered by the medical community to be a treatment. She's essentially undergoing therapy. You'd be a real dick if you stopped being her friend.

By analogy, this is just as absurd as saying that therapy for schizophrenics who hear voices is having people follow them around and whisper in their ear. In both cases, you are treating mental illness by allowing it to manifest itself.

OP, your friend is mentally ill. React and make decisions accordingly concerning your relationship to them.

Male to female transgendered people have about a 1/5 suicide rate, so this concerns me greatly.

This seems low. I would think they would have a lot of issues. Hope all goes well.

Not sure if you're full of shite, but if you're not, I'm sorry to hear about your friend.

I refuse to believe someone was born the wrong gender. That's a huge identity crisis, and I hope he realizes what he's signing up for

eta: Yes, you should still be friends after the surgery. I'd just try and let him know what he's about to get himself into

Wife's cousin male, now identifies as female, will probably fully transition soon. She had problems for years including suicidal thoughts and other mental issues, she seems way happier now so I'm ok with that. But honestly, I still don't quite understand and dread the day I have to explain it to the kids.

That said, family is family and friends are friends, you don't have to hang out all the time but you should still love and support (within reason) them.

I mean kudos to you for being tolerant and all to your friend. But this word makes me mad.

If you have a dick, you're a man. Period. End of discussion. If you want to be gay, then fine. But cutting off your dick and calling yourself Sally does not change the fact that you are a man.

EDIT: OP, serious about the first statement. I really don't know if I could be supportive to a friend choosing to do all that. I'd have a really hard time getting past it. Good for you.

Is this common for a man who is attracted to women to want to transition to being female? Seems like it would mainly be males attracted to other males who make the transition

because they are ostracized and don't have good support systems (e.g. your other friends that have already shunned her). If you care about the person and want to be a good friend, then get over your insecurity and be a real friend.

i'm sure it's much harder for her to make this life altering change than it is for you to stand by her in public.

Howard Stern just had the fake Bruce Jenner on his show today. Basically, he shaved his adam's apple, shaved his balls and is transitioning. Dude never had an orgasm with his new parts, so Howard put him on a washing maching. He had ten orgasms in a row. He also is going to be on a cereal box called "Weiners" and instead of throwing the javelin, he's going to throw his penis. He also had special panty hose to hide his junk in. Funniest damn skit I've heard. He is also doing a show with Dustin Diamond (Screech) called "Shaved by the balls".

At one point I read where its possible with the right surgeon because I was trying to figure out how in the hell this was medically possible.

That was a very bad day for google searches.
