now I see them charging a delivery fee plus they want a tip on top of that

I am one currently... part time.
You can make 20 bucks an hour if you are busy. If you aren't busy you make minimum wage. You won't get more than 35 hours a week, but that is good for a side job.
The hours are flexible and I don't have to kill myself working in the store. It is a good supplemental income or a good college job.

For the MILLIONTH time... the delivery fee doesn't go to the driver.

Delivered food, but not pizza. I worked two to three nights a week and pulled about 100 to 150 in tips, plus minimum wage as hourly pay each night. Was awesome for a college kid, since it was really just spending cash for me. Hours were terrible and some of the places I delivered in BR scare me to think about now.
They did where I worked. If they don't go to the driver, then what do they go to? The place I worked put that in when gas prices started going up. They didn't state it or anything, but I got a dollar for each order I took. Made about 30 bucks a night just from that.

Besides pizza and Jimmy Johns what else delivers? Wish the Chinese place would.

if you drive your own car, then what does the delivery fee pay for? from the sound of your frustration, you probably miss out on a lot of tips because of this. it would benefit the drivers if the menu price was just increased

Baton Rouge doesn't have Sushi or Chinese delivery? Jesus that's pitiful.
If I recall, isn't there a delivery service in BR that will go and pick up take out food from various restaraunts and deliver to your home?

Drivers have always received some small mileage compensation. When the large chains implemented the $3.00ish delivery charge several years back, people assumed that went to the driver. It did not. It goes straight to the local store's bottom line.

Made good money part time back in the late 90s, but the LSU Papa Johns was the 2nd busiest in the country. Its a numbers game. More deliveries =more money. Plus we got a % of the delivery price for mileage and there were a lot of large orders. Averaged closer to 16/hr but that was nearly 20 years ago. 40/hr on busy nights were not uncommon but that balanced out with dead arse slow nights. Saw some interesting things during those days. Good times.

I delivered for one day. It sucked.

You could sell drugs during your deliveries and make good money.

I looked at this thread expecting to hear about naked girls answering the door, not people bitching about the delivery charge.
I want to hear the crazy stories delivery drivers have.

Depends. On the best days I would make 20 an hour.
Whatever you do, don't work for Jimmy John's. Work for Papa John's or Domino's. They actually reimburse per delivery.
But yeah typically it would be about 10-12 an hour after you pay for gas.
Also for someone asking for crazy delivery stories, in Tuscaloosa working at the Jimmy John's in Northport I delivered down to the Retreat and I got flashed by two chicks for a tip. They also called the store and told my manager to give me their number while I was on the way back. They were super drunk.
Also I delivered to a hotel in South Florida and the dude would NOT answer the door. He just kept yelling about how he wouldn't open the door after he ordered the damn pizza. I even verified his full name through the door. I left the pizza on the ground without a tip.

OH damn I just remembered a bunch more.
In South Florida again I went through a really bad neighborhood that actually had permanent roadblocks on a bunch of exits out of the neighborhood so that cops could monitor who goes in and out, and I literally got blocked by about 12 people standing in the street staring at me through my windshield. They just sat there spitting, throwing beer bottles and shite. I literally reversed full speed and got the frick out of there. One of my coworkers was a 6'5" black dude and he got straight up mugged and beat to shite in the same neighborhood after someone called in a pizza to an abandoned house like two weeks earlier. Being a delivery driver in a bad area is a really bad idea.

I did in the late 80s for one semester. Great gig, it was a pizza joint in the mall in a college town so it closed at 9pm each night. I worked Fri/Sat 5-9 and got .50/pie plus tips on top of min wage. It was a specialty joint and had repeat customers I'd treat right and get good tips. Most nights I'd walk out with $25 cash (it was late 80s..) which would go far in the college bars.
Our delivery radius was only 3 miles so that was nice. Never got robbed and got beers for tips sometimes.

I did it my freshman year at Johnny's. There were some nights we did make $20 an hour but only because they paid minimum wage and you got all your tips. Hell there was one night I got stuck as the only driver and I took 22 deliveries. Came out to about $90 in tips + 7.25 for 5 hours + tax breaks when you turn in milegae. Probably why the store closed down papa johns and the big chains pay their drivers like 2.50
Also I'll never forget the day I went in hungover AF and they put an extra pizza in the bag. Pulled off after the delivery and ate it. Made the day a whole lot better
