I don't drink but take a puff of bud every now and again.
When I don't partake I seem to have very vivid and strange dreams.

You probably have a larger bank account too. Dang.
Congrats on the no drinking!

I've also found sometimes going to bed a little later gets same or a better sleep.
Going to bed too early can actually make it worse.
I've noticed that. If I go to bed around 1 and get up at 6, I feel the same as if I went to bed at 10.

I was a pretty serious homebrewer so the beer wasn't as expensive as you would think. I was brewing 10 gallons at a time (around 4 cases) for about 35 bucks. Thanks!

Start getting some exercise. Sucks at first but you'll get used to it and it'll help you sleep. Helped me a lot. I was a full blown alcoholic though. Just made a year without.
Gives you something to replace the habit with as well

No way you drank that much a night "just to get a buzz".

When you are drinking, you don’t go into REM (dream) sleep
This is most likely true but for some reason, I wake up earlier and more refreshed when I drink the night before. I have great workouts the day after.

This is me and I'm sure it's just boredom too.
Either I drink 4/6 beers or 2/3 neats(3rd btl?). I wonder what's more fatting?

I've assumed so but not sure.
The one thing I noticed when I take a week off or cut down on drinking is the sweet snacks go up so I have to watch that.

Yeah, thats not very healthy. You would be considered to have an alcohol problem to experts based on this amount consumption

The last week my dreams have been intense. I'll wake up and have to try and figure out if the dream is over or not. How long does this shite last?
Try some melatonin, but are you feeling tired in the morning? if not, I'd chalk it up to getting better sleep

I've been taking melatonin. It helps a lot.

My yearly bloodwork was always good but yeah, time to start worrying about that stuff

oh yeah. none of my family or friends have ever talked to me about having a problem but i realized it was becoming or could become pretty major. hence the slowdown. I don't necessarily want to quit forever but I do want to break the habit of drinking every day.

I have been the exact same way. I always drink a few beers or have a little whiskey at night after work, but as of today I will not be drinking on Sundays or any week nights. My reasoning is weight loss and trying to sleep better as well. I'll get back to this thread if I start having the intense dreams.
I'm not a doctor or anything, but I have done a lot of research on the subject for health reasons. The reason the dreams are so intense is because your body is trying to make up for all of the nights that you slept without getting into the REM stage of sleep. The alcohol suppresses REM sleep, so when drinking you go to sleep faster but without ever getting into the deepest possible sleep. This is why alcoholics experience delusions when quitting. There body knows that they missed so many years of REM sleep that the body starts to force the person to "dream" while they are awake.

Congrats to you on putting it down. I quit to try and lose weight as well. Quit as a New Year's resolution. After 6 months, I said to myself, if I can go 6 months without drinking, let me see how long I can go. This New Years will be 20 years. Life is different but better without drinking. I haven't had a hangover in a long time. Health is a lot better too. More people should try it. Not a sign of weakness.
