Update:
We are going to provide a month's pay as severance.

I won't bring up the fact that she lied to me at all.

The conversation will be all around the most important reason as to why she is being let go...we are restructuring and cannot keep an extra assistant and instead need to hire another sales person.
Performance issues and dishonesty aside, this is the real truth.

Then I'd handle it like this:

1- Make sure there is another person (Mgr/Dept head) in attendance.
2- Have her Severance package in hand.
3- Tell her about restructuring and thus why her position is being done away with. I would NOT mention hiring another sales person. At all.

4-Wish her the best and then say "so-in-so" will help you gather your things and walk you out.

DO NOT get into a discussion with her. Be direct and to the point.

of course in the military you don't get fired. But bosses have ways of getting rid of people they don't want around.

I was once sent to a base that had some real dickheads working there. People who had been there a long time and essentially thought they were part of their own Army. Anyway, there was this one particular dickhead. He followed UCMJ guidelines, but just barely. I just didn't want him around, but upon discussing it with others learned that this guy was a total dickhead willing to confront anyone , superior officer or not. Confrontation doesn't serve anyone. So I didn't even talk to the guy about it . I had him transferred, had all his belongings shipped to his new duty station and cancelled his security pass so that the next day he simply couldn't get in the building.

He had to go to security , was directed to personal and informed that he had been transferred. Nice and tidy.

Have everything documented. If they go to the employment commission, documentation will need to be shown by you.

Best way to do this. Have everybody go in for a meeting. Tell them all that layoffs are hard and the easiest way to do it would be to call the names of everybody who gets to stay. Leave her name out.

Good advice. No need to say that.

Ow that is the hardest thing to do for me. Telling someone that they are fired.
One thing i can say, just be straight to the point tell his/her issues and that's it.
Easy for us to say but this is your job nothing personal you must gather your confident and stick with the decision

You owe it to them and yourself to be as direct and to the point as possible. Do not drag it out, it never helps. Don't make it personal, even after they make it personal, it's not worth it.

If possible, I would have someone there as a witness. It makes it odd for a moment, but it keeps everyone (fired employee) in check, and eliminates problems later.

Everything I just said I learned from doing it not in this fashion before. It's never easy and you should be glad you are having a hard time with it, means you may be human.

So this might be an awkward time to ask this, but I see you are looking to hire a sales person... mind if I ask what type of sales exp you are looking for? I just "might know someone" that would be interested if its the right opportunity.

If it's going to come as a shock to them, you've already failed at your job.

If you were any good at what you do, they would know that it was coming and exactly why.

Maybe you should be fired first.

Yeah so I own the company and did not hire her - partner did.
Also she won't see it coming because she has no idea of the strategic shift we are about to make.
Thanks for that though

How much history do you have with this person? I would approach it as you having a chance to free a coworker and give her a chance to find a better position... Keep it positive. Don't make her feel like she sucked at the job, even if she did

If you are a male and you are firing a woman then get another female in the room with you when you do it. Pull the bandaid, wish her well and be done with it. Firing someone is much easier than you would think, laying someone good off is really hard.

It went better than I could have thought. Actually these responses were very helpful. Kept it brief, did not bring up hiring a new sales person, didn't bring up negative stuff from the past and it was very cordial on the way out.

I have to say, I am not intimidated by much of anything in the business world but for whatever reason this had my stomach in knots. Glad it's over.

You tell them, “you don’t work here no more.”
