Be straight up. Do not sugarcoat it. "We have spoken about these issues in the past but not it is time to we have to move in another direction".

There is a good Planet Money podcast last week about Netflix and the way they do with employees. Basically, remember it's a team not a family. People are on many teams through their life, it's time to find another team and continue. It's a professional team at work, you get paid to be there, she will be picked up by another team at some point. It's part her journey according to the lady at Netflix. But she is probably going to freak out and go crazy, prayers bro.

Well at least you aren't a retail big box.

It takes a mountain of paperwork to fire someone

Any tips out there OT?
"just fix the glitch"

Also, can you offer a payroll cut of about 30% to allow the situation to handle itself?

Will have to do it Wednesday and it's going to come as a shock to the person for sure

If for performance or disciplinary issues, a firing should never come as a shock to an employee. If this is the case, I'd fire the manager, because that manager hasn't been doing their job correctly.

An employee generally fires themselves. The manager or supervisor simply does the formality ... providing that the employee has been verbally counseled, followed by written documentation.

You've been paying this person for NOT doing their job, where they ultimately cost you more money in lost production.

Yeah, please go file unemployment.

I've fired people before and had an asshat I thought was a decent manager in the room with me completely say dumbass things when the person being fired lost it.
Ooh, not good.

I've been on the other end as well where I'm just supposed to be the witness who generally shouldn't say anything but in one instance, I had no choice but to interject and basically take over the preceedings even though I didn't know the specific details because the person doing the firing was doing that bad of a job at it, it was so awkward.

We find it's always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have statistically shown that there's less chance of an incident if you do it at the end of the week.

Have at least one other person present, preferably a female. Short ,to the point, be prepared for her to cry and have an exit strategy. Don't have any debate, less you say the better.

Like others have posted, straight and to the point.
Avoid the "you did this and you did that".

By all means have a third person present.

I have fired many people and have never had anyone get unemployment. If you haven't been documenting then your probably going to be paying unemployment. Make sure your have followed all the steps laid out in your employee handbook. Then be honest and don't make it a hour long talk. Be quick and to the point. Don't argue, if she disagrees that's ok. Don't try to convince her. I like to be truthful with people, if they don't know why they are being fired then how are they going to change? I know some it doesn't matter but I try to make employees improve. I have many talks and give someone every opportunity to change before firing.

Like others have said, short and sweet. Couple of things most people don't think of. If you park in the same place every day, park somewhere else far away. Don't want to get keyed by a pissed ex employee.

Also, don't have anything throwable within reach when you give her the news. Be prepared for screaming and general craziness. Women go nuts much more so than guys. Last place I worked (big financial firm) girl being let go went ballistic and threw her chair through the conference room window. Thankfully, it wasn't me doing the firing.

You better have all this shite well documented as you can expect a call/letter from an attorney.
