You should finger bang her on your thirty minute lunch. Let her talk about that.

There's some missing information here...

Either you:

1) aren't really the boss
2) not her boss
3) a little bitch that lets HR push him around
4) said more than just what you posted
5) made this whole thing up or embellished

I think it's probably some combo of the 5

This.

To HR, Documented activity is the only way to prove your actions aren't racist, sexist, ageist, or any other -ist.

This. I agree completely. Build a case for an inept employee. Not to mention she needs to learn not to throw stones living a glass house. Sounds like she was a "silver spoon" spoiled kid growing up.

Side question, if I go to subway and tell the chick how to make my sandwich, do I get to call myself her boss?

OP needs to chill.

Also. screw having to "clock in." She should be allowed extra personal time just for having to do that.

this...and no, you weren't over the line. Employees get paid to work... not fk off on the company dollar. My only other question would be, what kind of expectations have you established?
My support staff knows what's expected and they do their jobs. If they're through with the tasks for the day, I don't say shite if they are engaging in some other activity for a bit.

Better method would have been to call her into your office, and calmly reflect your disappointment, and then give her an assignment. Or, you could have just called her in and asked her to complete something - the message would have been delivered.

Absolutely the wrong thing to do. Some employees will never know they are in the wrong unless notified. You are essentially gearing up to fire her without warning in this scenario.

Put yourself in her shoes - would you rather a discreet warning prior to going complete cheesedick, or to be reprimanded weeks later for a track record of cheesedickness?

Sounds also like you may work at one of the ex-LSU hospitals. Most our employees in Monroe get reallllllllllllllly insulted if they have to work. But if you are a boss that might ask someone to do work, then you probably don't work at ex-LSU. And HR wouldn't give a crap either way.

Got to work at about 7:20 this morning. Unlock my door, go in my office. One of my staff is already sitting at her desk (clocked in) outside my office and I can hear her discussing everything under the sun and the moon about her boyfriend, makeup tips, food, etc - nothing at all work related.

Well 8:20 rolls around and I realize all she's done is talk - she hasn't done any work. So I point-blank ask her, "do you need some work to do? All you have done is talk all morning."

You are 100% right. However, people's egos are fragile (including your own) and this probably wasnt' the most tactful way to handle it. I can't stand people who don't work, but what positive would come from this? At best, she will hate you and not give 100%. At worst, HR takes her side. Nothing good comes out of it.

A better way to handle it would be to say, "Hey XXXXXX, Can I speak to you for a moment in my office?" THen bring her in the office, ask about some current projects going on to get a grasp on where she's at and then give her a goal that you want completed (documented via email of course). If she doesn't complete the goal, then it's time to have a talk with her in private, not belittle in front of her coworkers. You sound like you've never managed anyone before using your method.

It sucks that you have to do it this way, but as fragile as everyone's ego is and as PC as the workplace is, this is the better way. Plus, it doesn't offend her and it feels like you're just giving her work and goals, not belittlement. It's just more effective.

I don't get this passive aggressive way of doing things either.

have a problem? Talk to the employee first in private and dont' belittle them in front of everyone. Be nice about it and just say you need less chatting in the office due to blah blah blah and here are the goals we need to reach. Document the talk and the goals.

When/If they're not met or the behavior continues, then you have something to bring to HR and you gave them a fair warning.

I just want to clarify that it doesn't sound like you are her boss. I'm sure that hasn't been mentioned yet.
