Does it matter? I don't think the big man upstairs would condemn you to hellfire and eternal damnation just because you (un)knowingly ate meat on a Friday during Lent...

It's a venial sin I believe. Most definitely not a mortal sin. What is silly is people who care so much about Lent and don't even observe. They just love to spew vitriol at people for their beliefs.

You got any of that hippo to share?

What I don't get is why so many people thing catfish are OK for Lent. They are mammals. Most people don't know that.

Catfish are classified as Actinopterygii. The ray-finned fishes, constitute a class or subclass of the bony fishes.

If it lives in water, it is ok to eat. That's what I go by during lent.

Why would anyone think a non-fish animal would be considered a fish? Frog and gator are not fish, therefore they are meat.

well we like to laugh at silly things and this whole tradition is silly

also, more specifically, the entire scheme gets absolutely absurd with all of the rule bending and exceptions, which is the focus of the thread

if the rule makers (who are mortal and are not God, for the record) keep bending the rules to make it easier on people, then the tradition is over

What about oysters, scallops, and clams? I know they're shellfish and not fish, but does this make them meat as well?

Catholic dogma, or real life? It's all meat under the latter.

However, the Pope transubstantiated it into fish on Fridays during Lent.

Me too and I quit years ago.

Organized religion is really quite ridiculous when you get dig in.

My parents were born catholic -- so they indoctrinated me with Catholicism with no opportunities to learn about other religion. What exactly is a kid supposed to say? Kids are told to believe so they do.

My parents were only catholic because my grandparents raised them as Catholic. Again, indoctrination of someone who doesn't have the ability to explore alternatives.

For some people it's great to be Religion X, Y or Z and they really believe it. I think some question the religion, but can't accept that their entire life up to that point was a lie and in turn continue to have doubts in their heads but refuse to actually speak out for in fear of having to confront certain realities.

My opinion on the two types of people who promote organized religion.

According to this logic, my boyfriend would say my dog is a fish.

Neither are warm blooded, which is the purpose (I think) of not eating meat on Lent.

P.S. I live in GA and nobody here is Catholic so they think I am a dope on Fridays.

1. Frog is an amphibian NOT A FISH!!

2. Fish/crawfish/seafood is meat no matter how much Catholics try to pretend it isn't

3. The so called fasting on Fridays during lent is one of the stupidest religious traditions. And I say that as one who was raised catholic. It's a spring Friday night and I will go to hell for eating a steak or a cheeseburger or a hotdog but damn I can eat as much fried fish and boiled crawfish as my stomach can handle and chase it down with a six pack or three and the pearly gates will open up wide.
Yep Catholics, that is the very definition of fasting.

My parents still get pissy when I point out the stupidity of Lenten Fridays.
